And when they entered, they went up into the upper room where they were staying: Peter, James, John, and Andrew; Phillip and Thomas; Bartholomew and Matthew; James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot and Judas the son of James. Acts 1:13

Simon the Zealot was a Jewish nationalist, a fanatic devoted to the law and having bitter hatred for anyone who compromised with Rome. The Zealots were crazed with hatred for the Romans, likened to some of the Liberals and Conservatives today who rant and rave at one another over politics!

Having love for ones country over love of God is a nationalist of whom we have thousands in the evangelical world. Simon repented of this when he met Jesus and became a disciple who loved Him more than he loved Israel and the doctrine of the Zealots.

Tradition says Simon died a martyr, his apostolic symbol is a fish lying on a Bible which indicates he was a former fisherman who became a fisher of men through preaching like many of the disciples.

"He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. "And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me." Matthew 10:37,38
