Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, being tempted for forty days by the devil. And in those days He ate nothing, and afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry. And the devil said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread." Luke 4:1-3

In the previous Messages of Old Testament men of God, they all knew who they were and to whom they belonged in order to stand in faith and believe! The question is, "Do you?" Jesus was baptized by John in the Jordan, the heavens opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in the form of a dove and then in an audible voice God said, "This is My beloved Son in whom I am well pleased."
Now, in the wilderness, tired, hungry and all alone, the devil tested His faith by questioning who He really was and said, "If you are the Son of God!" If? Was there any doubt? Now put yourself in Jesus's sandals, when you are weak and tired out and the devil comes to tempt you, do you stand your ground and believe, or sink in despair and fall on your face? The devil is a coward and a seducer who comes when people are on their last legs, just as the lions wait for the weak, the young and the stragglers before they attack their prey!
Jesus spoke out and said to Satan, "It is written!" This is where we gain our strength to overcome the powers of darkness, we show ourselves approved to God as workmen who rightly divide the word of God! Ref. II Timothy 2:15 If you expect to see miracles, signs and wonders, you must know the word of God and the promises He has made to you in order to stand against the schemes of the devil!
"It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.' " Luke 4:4
