There has been much debate over the 39 stripes that Jesus received, whether or not they represented thirty-nine root diseases and why 39 and not 40. Regardless, it was customary for the Romans to give 40 stripes less 1, because 40 normally caused death.
The scripture states that by His stripes, meaning each stripe was a strip of flesh ripped off by the Roman's "Cat of nine tails" whip we are healed and the Greek word for healed in this scripture, iaomai, means to cure, heal or make whole. In any case this horrible whipping that ripped most of the flesh off His back healed all our sicknesses, diseases and iniquities. Praise God!
Jesus took upon Himself a horrible death on the cross, suffering untold pain and torment, being beaten, whipped, mocked and ridiculed on the way to His execution, all for our sins to whom the sentence of death was due.
Jesus bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we having died to sins, might live for righteousness, by whose stripes (wounds) you were healed. I Peter 2:24
