O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? Romans 7:24
The Romans were a cruel brood of torturers who could keep people alive for days, even weeks as they were crucified, left to rot on a cross for the birds of the air to eat! Another horrible act of cruelty was to chain a corpse to a healthy person until the disease and decomposition killed them. So it is with our "Old Man!"
We are born again into supernatural beings, washed in the blood of Christ, and set free from the law of sin and death! But, there is a fleshly corpse tied to us, our old human, fleshly man who was crucified with Christ, lowered into the grave of baptism, considered dead to us, but the stench of that old life still haunts at times our spiritual man.
In order to walk in the Spirit, one has to keep "The old man in the grave!" That old life that appears sometimes out of nowhere to tempt us and try our resolve is always there and the smell of death that surrounds us can only be removed by the beautiful fragrance of Christ! This is walking in the Spirit!
But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language, out of your mouth. Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him. Colossians 3:8-10
