But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession. And he kept part of the proceeds, his wife also being aware of it, and brought a certain part and laid it at the apostles feet. But Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself?" Acts 5:1-3

As people sold their possessions, houses and lands to help with provision for the growing number of new disciples, Ananias and his wife Sapphira devised a plan to vow to give the proceeds but withhold some for themselves and lied about it! To sell what was theirs was fine for no one commanded them to give and they could have kept it all, but to pledge it all and then lie to the Holy Spirit by holding some back was a death sentence!

The Bible says to let your yes be yes and your no be no, in other words when you make a pledge or take an oath, don't break it, for it can hold grave consequences, especially when it is to the Holy Spirit. True, there are millions of pledges and oaths made and broken every day, but when the Spirit of God was poured out on His people He expected them to be honest and truthful about their dealings with Him, making examples of those who didn't obey.

Walking in the Spirit demands obedience and truthfulness because we are in fact God's people, His family, representing Him in the earth. The scripture defines wisdom as the fear of the Lord, something there isn't much of today. I wonder how many drop dead every day from lying to the Holy Spirit as Ananias and his wife did, bringing fear upon the entire assembly of God?

So great fear came upon all the church and upon all who heard these things. And through the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were done among the people. Acts 5:11,12
