In order for one to become a disciple of Jesus Christ, one must be born from above because we walk in a spiritual realm of His kingdom and not in fleshly world of religious ritual! There are many today who would call themselves disciples because they joined the church, prayed a prayer or were baptized. There is even a denomination called Disciples of Christ, but without the new birth it is only a name.
The Pharisee, Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews, an example of a religious church member, but devoid of God's Spirit came to Jesus asking questions about His ministry and He told him that he must be born again to see the kingdom. Without the new birth there can be no spiritual sight, no revelation and no power and authority to become a disciple.
A disciple of Christ who has become a new creation is no longer bound by the confines of this world because he has become a spiritual being! He no longer walks according to the five senses but by the leading of Holy Spirit's voice. Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit says the Lord!
"Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter the kingdom of God. "That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit." John 3:5,6
