The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is God's promise of power and anointing for His body, without which, they would not be able to minister in their gifts and callings. The first church at Pentecost was told by Jesus to stay and wait for the Holy Spirit to fall upon them, and so He did and the outcome was 3000 people were saved!
Over the years there has been much controversy concerning the "Second blessing" as it is sometimes called and many of the main-line denominations believe that it was a one time event and then passed away, but that is simply not true! Jesus is our model and what happened at Pentecost is still relevant for today for the true disciples of the Lord Jesus.
When one is born again the Holy Spirit indwells him and when he is baptized in the Holy Spirit, He comes upon that person releasing the power, anointing and gifts of His Spirit! We as the body of Christ are called to minister to the lost, needy and sick of this world and we must have power from on high to accomplish it, or we will just be another Christian Country club!
"But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth." Acts 1:8
