"To you it has been given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to the rest it is given in parables, that 'Seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.' Luke 8:10

Much of the teaching today on being fruitful by sowing seed is about money and how to multiply it for yourselves and for those who are preaching to you. Although there is some truth to that, Jesus wasn't talking about money, He was teaching the disciples how to be fruitful by sowing the word of God into the hearts of men.

The seed is the word of God and the soil is the heart of man which must be prepared to receive the word just as the natural soil is prepared for the desired crop it is to produce. Within this parable that Jesus was teaching contained four types of soil that the seed was sown into, illustrating the various conditions of the heart of man.

The first mentioned are those who are on the wayside, those who hear the word but allow the devil to come and steal it right out of their hearts. I have seen hundreds that heard preaching, teaching and all sorts of Bible studies and looked like they were receiving it but after a short while the devil stole it from them and they disappeared.

"Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. "Those by the wayside are the ones who hear, then the devil comes and takes away the word out of their hearts lest they should believe and be saved." Luke 8:11
