John the brother of James, to whom He gave the name Boanerges, that is, "Sons of Thunder." Mark 3:17
You don't get the name "Sons of Thunder" for nothing and James and John were certainly what you would expect to be called that, being rough hewn and colorful characters. Like the "Sons of Anarchy" of today they were a force to be reckoned with!
But like all tough guys when they met Jesus and became new creations they mellowed out and were gentle as lambs and John was later known as "The Beloved Disciple." John wrote I John, II John, III John and Revelation and preached among the churches of Asia Minor until he was banished to the Isle of Patmos and later died of natural causes being the only disciple to escape being martyred!
The Sons of Thunder are a prime example of the new birth in Christ, a total transformation and a new way of life for those who make Jesus Lord and follow Him! When one is born again they don't have to guess whether they are saved or go around doubting their salvation, because they have been made into new creations in Christ!
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. II Corinthians 5:17
