For at the window of my house I looked through my lattice, and saw among the simple, I perceived among the sons a young man devoid of understanding, passing along the street near her corner; and he took the path to her house in the twilight, in the evening, in the black and dark night. And there a woman met him, with the attire of a harlot and a crafty heart. She was loud and rebellious, her feet would not stay at home. At times she was outside, at times in the open square, lurking at every corner. Proverbs 7:6-12

The proverb describes someone, either man or woman who takes the path of immorality and is met by a harlot, or a spirit of harlotry in the dark of night, meaning deep spiritual darkness! Happens all the time, someone ignores the spiritual battle, the discipline of taking every thought captive and they begin to look for something to satisfy the lust in their heart.

Take King David for instance, mighty warrior, military commander and a man after God's own heart. He had fought many battles since his youth, defeated the enemy thousands of times and was an experienced believer, knowledgeable of God's word and the consequences of sin, but one night he threw it all out the window! All it takes is letting your guard down to something that has been trying to get your attention. David didn't go to war with his armies, probably exhausted, burned out and worn down by thousands of battles, not to mention his constant escape from his father-in-law, Saul, trying to kill him!

Bored one night, he looked down from his balcony at his beautiful neighbor's wife bathing just outside his home and the enemy whispered in his ear, "You deserve a break today, after all you are King of Israel and can have anyone you desire, and she is married to a Gentile!" Justifying his motive, he called for her to be brought to his bed chamber and committed adultery with her which resulted in her pregnancy. The rest is history, he had her husband killed, married her and acted as if nothing had happened, but it greatly displeased the Lord and gave great occasion to his enemies! The consequences of his sin followed him to the grave!

Now therefore, listen to Me, My children; pay attention to the words of My mouth: do not let your heart turn aside to her ways, do not stray into her paths; for she has cast down many wounded, and all who were slain by her were strong men. Her house is the way to Hell, descending to the chambers of death. Proverbs 7:24-27
