And as He walked by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon (Peter) and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. Mark 1:16
Andrew was a former disciple of John the baptist and introduced Peter to Jesus. He was a powerful witness and eventually went out as a missionary preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ. As Peter's brother he also was a fisherman whom Jesus transformed to fish for the souls of men.
According to tradition it was in Achaia, Greece where Andrew prayed for the Governor's wife and she was healed and converted to Christianity as well as the Governor's brother. The Governor Aepeas, was enraged and had Andrew arrested and condemned him to die on the cross. Feeling unworthy as did Peter about being crucified on the same shaped cross as Christ he begged that his be different!
Andrew was crucified on an X shaped cross which became an apostolic symbol of two crossed fish symbolizing his death and former livelihood as a fisherman. Do you see any familiarity in these disciples to what we call disciples today? These men gave all to follow Jesus, even their own lives in obedience to the call of their Master.
He first found his own brother Simon, (Peter) and said to him, "We have found the Messiah." John 1:41
