"Therefore, of these men who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, "beginning from the baptism of John to that day when He was taken up from us, one of these must become a witness with us of His resurrection." Acts 1:21,22

Before the fire could fall, the altar of the Lord had to be repaired by replacing one of the stones with Matthias. When Judas fell, the government of God was left incomplete and another had to be chosen in order for the model that Jesus left us to be complete.
Matthias had been with the rest of the disciples following Jesus from the beginning and was a devout man of God who not much is known except that he preached the gospel and suffered martyrdom for his faith. Even though he wasn't as well known as his brothers in Christ, he gave all for the gospel and is an example of what a true disciple of Jesus Christ should be.
These men we are about to see who walk out their faith in Christ were not extraordinary men as though they were super Christians, they were men just like us with real feelings and failures, seeking to please God and fulfill His destiny for the Kingdom! We would do well to follow their lead!
And they cast their lots, and the lot fell on Matthias. And he was numbered with the eleven apostles. Acts 1:26
