The word abide means to live, dwell and remain, making salvation a relationship and not a one time ritual. As the natural branch receives its nourishment from the vine, so we too are fed by abiding in God's presence.
Branches don't live apart from the vine although many suppose they can, never spending time with God. On my morning walk there are many wild grape vines, actually called Mustang grapes. Like wild horses they grow out from the vine and bear fruit, even hundreds of feet from their source, but they are still connected to the vine.
So it is with us, as long as we are connected to Jesus in a loving relationship in communion we will receive spiritual life from Him. Are you abiding in the vine? Are you receiving the supernatural life of God, or are you dried up and desolate, cut off from the rivers of living water?
"I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing." John 15:5
