On the third day, there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. And when they ran out of wine the mother of Jesus said to Him, "They have no wine." Jesus said to her, "Woman what does your concern have to do with me? My hour has not yet come." John 2:4
The wedding was a type and shadow of things to come, the first communion with the Bridegroom and His Bride, a foreshadow of the Church of Jesus Christ. The mother of Jesus told the servants, "Whatever He says to you, do it."
There were six stone water pots according to the manner of purification containing 20 or 30 gallons apiece. Jesus told the servants to fill the water pots with water and draw some out and take it to the master of the feast and they took it. When the master of the feast tasted the water that was made wine he called the bridegroom.
The master of the feast said to the bridegroom, "Every man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests have drunk, then he serves the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now!"
This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee and revealed His glory; and His disciples believed in Him. John 2:1
WATER TO WINE
Whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life. John 4:14
Water represents several things in the scripture, the water pots at the wedding were for purification as water has always been for cleansing. Water can also be a symbol of the Holy Spirit as presented in the scripture as a fountain of water.
Jesus said in John 7:38, "He who believes in Me as the scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water. This is where water is representative of the Holy Spirit who flows out of us like water. We are also called lamps, that contain oil, and fountains that flow out of us like a river. It is appropriate that Jesus used the water pots to make "Divine wine" for the guests as it also is symbolic of the blood that cleanses used in communion.
Turning water into wine is indicative of Christ's future communion where He turns wine into blood. From the wedding where He performs His first miracle to the cross where His heart is pierced out of which came water and blood is symbolic of His life and miracles that manifested His glory!
And he showed me a river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb. Revelation 22:1
WINE TO BLOOD
And as they were eating, Jesus took the bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to His disciples and said, "Take eat; this is My body." Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you. "For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins." Matthew 26:26-28
The blood of Jesus would be offered for consumption in the form of wine. In the first century, the groom was responsible for the wine; Jesus is the Bridegroom providing the wine for his bride (the Church), The wine that Jesus will provide through his death, burial, and resurrection will be superior and will accomplish what the Law could not.
Jesus said concerning communion, "Do this in remembrance of Me." Since we don't have a picture of Him except maybe the "Shroud of Turin" what was He saying? He was telling us to remember what His blood was shed for and how we benefit from it. We are to remember it when Jesus sweat blood in the garden and gave us access to the throne of God, we are to remember Him when He was bruised and beaten and bled inside His body, we are to remember when He was whipped by a cat of nine tails 39 times to heal us, we are to remember the crown of thorns thrust upon His head to break the curse of poverty when Adam and Eve were expelled from the garden.
If that wasn't bad enough, we are to remember that He was led on the Via Delarosa, the way of suffering where He was to be crucified for our sins, we are to remember the nails driven into His hands, we are to remember the nails driven into His feet, and finally we are to remember the spear that was driven into His heart! Jesus' blood was shed for our health, our wealth and oursalvation! The blood of Jesus is a supernatural agent, a spiritual substance that transforms, heals, and delivers mankind from their sins. Remember Him!
Bless the Lord, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless His holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits: Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases, Who redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies, Who satisfies your mouth with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the eagles. Psalm 103:1-5
