Touching the Hem of His Garment
And suddenly a woman who had a flow of blood for twelve years came from behind and touched the hem of His garment. For she said to herself, "If only I may touch His garment, I shall be made well." Matthew 9: 20, 21

The Lord woke me up the other day with this passage of scripture on my mind. As I began to meditate and read all the references I realized that I had never thought about why the woman reached for the hem of Jesus' garment, I would have tackled Him and held on tight until I was healed, but that was not the case with her. When I began to study it I learned why.

In Numbers 15: 38-40 God instructed Moses to tell the people to make tassels on the corners of their garments and to put a blue thread in them. The tassels were to remind them of God's commandments and the blue thread represented the divinity of God. They also tied little boxes on the curls of their hair containing the law, being reminded daily, seeing them out of the corner of their eyes.

"Speak to the children of Israel: Tell them to make tassels on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and to put a blue thread in the tassels of the corners. "And you shall have the tassel that you may look upon it and remember all the commandments of the Lord and do them, and that you may not follow the harlotry to which your own heart and your own eyes are inclined. "And that you remember and do all My commandments, and be holy for your God."  Numbers 15: 38-40

The woman that touched Jesus' garment was more than likely a Jew because she knew the law of God and discerned that this man was truly a divine being. Obviously she had been following His teaching or maybe she had just heard about all the miracles that He was performing. In any case she was convinced that if she could just touch that hem she would be healed, and so it was, she was instantly cured.

In Luke's account of this woman it said that she had spent her entire livelihood on doctors but was not healed, sound familiar? Her life savings were probably exhausted trying to find a cure for her malady. It is no different today, we usually try to find a man to do God's work before we ever turn to the One who created us. You wouldn't dare take your Ford to a Chevy dealer to repair it, of course not, you would take it to the one that created it.

We have been led to believe that in this day of medical miracles somehow God has retired and given the right to heal to man, nonsense! Why would God suddenly raise up doctors in the last hundred years of history to heal His people, and what about the billions that died seeking a cure? From the beginning God has been our only source of healing whether we choose to believe it or not depends on us. What do you do when the doctors give up on you and your only source is God?

The woman with a twelve year hemorrhage was broke and given up on by the physicians so when she heard about Jesus she went after Him knowing in her heart that by just touching Him she would be made whole. Knowing from hearing reports about Jesus and relating what she heard from prophecies in Isaiah and Zechariah she knew God was with Him and she only had to reach out and touch Him.

They shall come over to you, and they shall be yours; they shall walk behind you, they shall come over in chains, and they shall bow down to you. They will make supplication to you saying, surely God is in you, and there is no other God. Isaiah 45: 14

Faith was welling up within the woman's heart as she proceeded to come through the noisy crowd to touch the only One who could help her. As her hands reached out to His garment and she finally touched Him, power surged from the Son of the living God like rivers of living water and immediately she was healed. Gory to God! Jesus then turned around perceiving that power had left His body and He saw the woman and said, "Daughter, be of good cheer; your faith has made you well. Go in peace."

Have you spent all your money on doctors, are you in some seemingly hopeless situation without a way out, you only need come and by faith with a humble heart ask the One who created you to heal and restore you to health. If one of your children came to you with some ailment would you refuse to help them, of course not, you would spare no expense to help them. Your heavenly Father spared no expense when He gave His only beloved Son for you, so that you could be made whole by His precious blood. He loves us more than we will ever know, so go ahead and trust Him and touch the hem of His garment. You won't be sorry!

Bless the Lord, O my soul and forget not all His benefits; Who forgives all of your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases, Who redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies. Psalms 103: 1-4

May the Lord open the eyes of your understanding and bless you with wisdom,
Your servant in Christ, Tim Laughlin

Now may the God of peace who brought up our Lord Jesus from the dead, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant make you complete in every good work to do His will, working in you what is well pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever, Amen. Hebrews 13: 20,21
