The Wedding That Changed The World!

On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to Him, "They have no wine." John 2:1-3

The wedding at Cana was just a typical Jewish celebration uniting two people in holy matrimony, but the significance of what was actually taking place in the Spirit changed the entire religious system forever! For eons, ever since Moses was entrusted with the commandments of God, a religion of works was established with animal sacrifices and a high priest to mediate for the people.

This story is not just about the miracle of turning water into wine, it is a chronicle of a new and living wine- skin about to contain the new wine of a new era, in which a dead and lifeless religion is done away with, and a new and living way is established by the sacrifice of its High Priest and the salvation of all of mankind to inherit by faith and not by the works of the flesh. Jesus started the transition by the miracle of the new birth, by taking the water of purification contained in six stone water pots, and turning it into the new wine, symbolic of His blood to be received by faith. The water pots of purification represented man's attempt to cleanse himself of sin by the works of the flesh and by changing the water into wine it represented our cleansing of sin by a perfect sacrifice, rendered once by the death, burial and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ!

The wedding ceremony is symbolic of our invitation by the Holy Spirit to become the very bride of the Lord Jesus Christ, the "Bridegroom," Husband and Father of the new and living way. A new paradigm was established when Jesus appeared on the scene to become the Lamb of God, a perfect sacrifice to atone for the sins of man once and for all. The High Priest had appeared to destroy an old dusty wineskin, filled with the traditions, rituals, laws, ordinances and animal sacrifices of a dead religion, based on works and not by faith.

"For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and lawless deeds I will remember no more." In that He says, "A new covenant." He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away. Hebrews 8:12,13

"And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine bursts the wineskins, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. But new wine must be put into new wineskins." Mark 2:22

New wine is wine that has not yet been fermented and when put into a wineskin, the fermentation process begins a chemical reaction that expands the wineskin and if it is old and dry it will burst and spill the wine, not being able to contain it. At the wedding at Cana a "New Wine" was introduced that would not be able to be contained in a dry and cracked religion of ritual and dead works!

Jesus is the very essence of the new wine being poured out into a new wineskin that would be able to contain the supernatural expansion in the Spirit that was about to take place and would change the world forever. When the wine that Jesus had transformed from water was given to the master of the feast, he marveled that someone would save the best wine for last, thus the beginning of a new way was about to begin. Everything the Jews knew to be their old religion was going to be nailed to a cross and completely transformed into a supernatural work that only the Holy Spirit could perform.

Even today our modern way of doing "Church" is outdated, dead and lifeless as we have resurrected the old priesthood, complete with temple, priest and ritual and put God into our own little wineskin of good intentions that cannot hold the majesty and greatness of a Holy God who is ever changing and expanding! In these last days a powerful outpouring will again change and destroy our ritualistic way of attempting to worship the Most High, and replace it with the power, presence and glory of God!

"But new wine must be put into new wineskins, and both are preserved." And no one having drunk old wine, immediately desires new; for he says, 'The old is better.' Luke 5:38,39

But Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation. Hebrews 9:11

The first miracle at the wedding at Cana began the formation of the New Testament people, no longer in bondage to a dead religion of works, set free to be led by the Spirit they were about to change the landscape of religion forever! With the advent of the "New Birth," born again believers became the temple in which the Spirit of the living God would dwell.

The High Priest, Jesus, Son of the living God would now mediate for a supernatural race of worshipers, a royal priesthood called forth from darkness to become ambassadors to a lost and dying world estranged from God by sin and iniquity. This new breed was given power and authority to heal the sick, raise the dead and cast out demons in the name of their Lord and the world was turned upside down by their presence in the earth as they presented a new way to inherit eternal life, by the preaching of the gospel of Jesus Christ!

Sadly, over eons the devil began to lead man back under the bondage of religion and ritual, resurrecting the old priesthood, by establishing a man to once again mediate for a people lulled to sleep by doctrines of demons slowly injected into their souls. With thoughts of a wedding to a heavenly Bridegroom long since forgotten and the power and authority of a people called of God lost, the new way became a history lesson taught in Sunday school. So, as you trudge off to another dead service of man-made tradition and ritual will you continue to keep God in His nice clean little box, or will you escape the darkness and become the people God has called you to be?

But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. I Peter 2:9
