The Unity Of Faith Part III

For by One Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free and have all been made to drink of one Spirit. For in fact the body is not one member but many. I Corinthians 12:13,14

Each of us who have been born again have been baptized into the body of Christ and each of us has a distinct gift given so that we can employ it within the fellowship of God's people that comprise Christ's body. The human body is comprised of many individual parts and they all work individually but are joined together in one body, so also is the body of Christ.

For instance the eye sees, the ear hears, the nose smells and so on, all have different functions but all are joined together in the same body and as the scripture says, if the whole body were an eye, where would be the hearing. We each have a very important function in the operation of the body, not just cells who get sluffed off daily by the millions, but viable parts that contribute life and health to all. Your body functions because each part is doing its share, it is not fighting with the other parts, it is in total harmony with the exception of disease or some other malady that attacks it, such as cancer.

Don't ever underestimate your gift or function within the body because you are needed, even your little toe when injured alerts the whole body to give attention to it and if it is lost the entire function of the body is affected adversely. Normally from my experience those with the greater gifts are deemed the weaker members but God so orchestrates this to promote humility and not prideful, selfish ambition which leads to division and idolatry, and is rampant within the church today, exalting men instead of God!

But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body just as He pleased. And if they were all one member, where would the body be? But now indeed there are many members, yet one body. And the eye cannot say to the hand, "I have no need of you"; nor again the head to the feet, "I have no need of you." No, much rather, those members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary. I Corinthians 12:18-22

And those members of the body which we think to be less honorable, on these we bestow greater honor; and our unrepresentable parts have greater modesty, but our presentable parts have no need. But God composed the body, having given greater honor to the part which lacks it, that there should be no division in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another. I Corinthians 12:23-25

Take Moses for instance one of the greatest leaders of all time and yet he was a stutterer, slow of speech and unable to speak clearly, imagine him saying to Pharaoh, "Pha, pha, pha-roah, le, le, let my people go!" The children of Israel would still be in bondage. Not to make light of a physical disability but to humble man in his arrogance, it is God who has a strange sense of humor. Look at the apostle Paul, an educated Pharisee of Pharisees, a PhD in religion, today we would introduce him as Dr.Rev. Bishop, Apostle, Saul, Paulus of Tarsus, LOL, OMG! Do you see how ridiculous man is in his arrogance and prideful behavior when in fact, Paul was an unassuming man and not an eloquent speaker by any means and what about that annoying thorn?

I have known many a man in the body of Christ who were rejected from speaking or being able to function in their gift because they were not educated or dressed well enough or had a disability of some kind that seemed to hinder them in some way. One such man came to the church where I was attending years ago with nothing, riding a bicycle and as I remember had lost all his teeth, and was very annoying to people because he was walking and living by faith and was gifted as a prophet. Certainly God wouldn't use someone like him, but when he prophesied, you had better get ready, because what he said came to pass!

Many others have passed through the halls of the modern, consumer driven, professional, dog-eat-dog world of religious, capitalistic and competitive superstars: carpet cleaners, fishermen, plumbers and thousands of other no-bodys for Jesus, just doing their part for the edification and greater good of the body of Christ. Men and women who gave all to give what God had given them to us without payment or accolades, without fanfare or parade, just good ole down to earth, or should I say, up to Heaven preaching, teaching, prophesying, miracle performing servants of God!

And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it. Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually. I Corinthians 12:26,27

And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healing, helps, administrations, various kids of tongues. I Corinthians 12:28

First apostles! Whoa wait a minute, where's the Senior Pastor, the associate, the church secretary, Paul's got it all out of order? How can you run a church with this bunch operating in those strange gifts, why it would ruin our services and who knows how long we would have to sit and listen, we would be in church all day! Yes, maybe so, but it would be a glorious day of experiencing what God has given His body!

There are specific reasons for such giftings to be issued within the body, the apostles have the blueprint of the the spiritual building and as master builders give oversight to their construction project. The prophets give divine direction and correction so that the church isn't driven off course, or worse, suffers shipwreck! The ones with the gift of miracles display to the body and to the world that the power of God is still in His church. Teachers lay a solid foundation of doctrine so that everyone is rooted and grounded in the Word of God and not deceived by false prophets and charlatan's sent by the enemy to destroy their faith.

As you can see there is more to "Church" than meets the eye, and it is a complex supernatural machine that when operating at optimum speed is an exact replica of the Lord Jesus Christ! I believe that many of the pastors today, because of tradition and the culture are in fact apostles and have planted churches with apostolic vision and power denying their true God-given title because of the modern day religious mindset that only accepts the gift of pastor. Until we allow God to restore His giftings and supernatural callings back to the church we will continue to be a giant quadriplegic eyeball rolling down the road with no Head trying to accomplish the will of God by the arm of the flesh!

How is it then, brethren? Whenever you come together, each one has a psalm, has a teaching, has a tongue, has a revelation, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification. I Corinthians 14:26
