The To Be And Not To Be Attitudes, Part VI
Blessed are the merciful. For they shall obtain mercy. Matthew 5:7
Everyone on the planet has at some time in their life received mercy from someone or from God for He rains on the righteous and the unrighteous. To show mercy is to exhibit an attribute of God Himself, a divine image of His very nature and character.
Jesus spoke of an unmerciful servant who owed his master much and his master threatened to sell him along with his wife and children, but he fell down before him and begged for mercy and his master felt compassion for him and forgave the debt. The servant then went out and found one of his fellow servants who owed him a small sum in comparison to what he had owed his master and had him thrown in prison. When his fellow servants heard this they reported it to their master and he was furious and had the unmerciful servant delivered to the torturers.
In a world without much mercy we would do well to take this story to heart for if you are a born again believer you have been forgiven all of your sins, transgressions and iniquities and washed clean by the blood shed by the Lord Jesus Christ who showed great mercy toward us all!
"Then his master, after he had called him, said to him, 'You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you begged me. 'Should you not also have had compassion on your fellow servant, just as I had pity on you?' "And his master was angry, and delivered him to the torturers until he should repay all that was due him. "So My heavenly Father also will do to you if each of you, from his heart, does not forgive his brother his trespasses." Matthew 18:32-35
