The Power To Bind And Loose

"Assuredly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in Heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in Heaven. Matthew 18:18

All believers have the authority to bind and loose, given by the Lord Himself, but many don't have a clue about how to use this powerful tool of deliverance. Jesus even called this authority one of the keys of the kingdom of Heaven.

In a mall the other day on the second floor, I happened to look down upon an area cordoned off for the toddlers and small children. As I looked I imagined the Lord looking down upon us as we struggle to walk this life in Christ like children playing in a playground. To try and operate God's weapons without training would be like giving a six year old a 45 caliber pistol and telling him to defend himself and the outcome would be devastating. So it is with many believers today, they have been given weapons of mass destruction but lack instruction to use them.

When I joined the Marine Corps years ago the main focus was to be able to operate and maintain an arsenal of weapons with accuracy and consistency to defeat our enemies with stunning results based upon our stringent training. When one comes to Christ he is given all the weapons, armor and gifts needed to defeat the powers of darkness, but in most cases they are used in ignorance by untrained people with second hand information and the result is an ineffective army of childish believers firing their weapons in the air.

"And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of Heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in Heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in Heaven." Matthew 16:19

"Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you." Luke 10:19

I learned deliverance and the ability to bind and loose thirty years ago the hard way, on my own without much instruction, but the Lord was with me and gave me the grace to be able to learn without too much collateral damage. One day I was attempting to cast a demon out of a woman when feeling a little cocky I commanded the demon to bow his knee before the Lord Jesus, he quickly responded in a deep male voice,"no!" I proceeded two more times with the same answer when the Holy Spirit said to me, "he's bowed three times, what else do you want him to do?"

That is when I knew in my heart that God had truly given us all power and authority over the powers of darkness and that nothing would be impossible to those who believed. From that time on I cast out demons, saw the sick healed and in two cases the dead raised by simply using my God-given right to operate under His power of attorney. Power of attorney is a written authorization to represent or act on another's behalf, in our case, the Lord Jesus Christ. In His word we have the right and authority to bind and loose.

If only believers would realize what they have been given to exercise their God given rights over an enemy who has been free to rule and reign over the earth because no one dared to stop him! The destruction today around the world, not to mention disease that is rampant is growing and will continue to grow and cause catastrophic results unless the church stands to oppose them.

"And these signs will follow those who believe: in My name (power of attorney) they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover." Mark 16:17,18

Let the saints be joyful in glory; let them sing aloud on their beds. Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a two edged sword in their hand, to execute vengeance on the nations (demon nations), and punishment on the peoples; to bind their kings (rulers of darkness) with chains, and their nobles (spiritual hosts of wickedness) with fetters of iron; to execute on them the written judgment- This honor have all His saints. Praise the Lord! Psalm 149:5-9

The word bind comes from a root word that means to fasten with chains or in other words to tie someone or something up so that it is impossible to escape. To target precisely what we are binding is very important to learn in order to see divine results or else we are just firing into the air. God watches over His word to perform it and He watches our every move in warfare to make sure that what we have bound stays bound.

To insure that we are in the will of God in regard to what we are attempting to bind we need to be students of His word, for in it His will is revealed. In order to fire a weapon that one is not familiar with he must first study the manual in order to fire it properly without harming himself. Keep in mind you are up against an enemy who is well trained in the art of subterfuge: a trick or device used in order to conceal, to escape or to evade.

The powers of darkness are a formidable force to be reckoned with and warfare is not for the faint of heart. To become a warrior of God one must be trained and equipped, always in an attitude of prayer and always on the alert for a counter attack that will come to test your foundation and your faith. King David killed Goliath with a slingshot, but from that time forward the enemies of God came against him and finally were able to defeat him with their deception and patience.

Don't ever underestimate your enemy's power to deceive you, remember he has been at it for thousands of years and has been trained by the master of deception, Satan himself. Samson was the strongest man that ever lived and yet the enemy seduced him and lulled him to sleep on the lap of Delilah ultimately costing him his life. Be careful that in your binding you don't become bound yourself.

Then the Philistines took him and put out his eyes and brought him down to Gaza. They bound him with bronze fetters, and he became a grinder in the prison. Judges 16:21

"Or how can one enter a strongman's house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strongman? And then he will plunder his house." Matthew 12:29

To bind the strongman is to attack the stronghold that he has over the person or thing in which you are attempting to bind. In other words the strongman is the demon attached to the stronghold or fortress set up because of sin or an open door that gave access to the enemy. In order to be able to allow someone to be set free the sin must be confessed and the doors closed in order to cast out the strongman and pull down the stronghold.

In the case of someone being totally demon- possessed and unable to confess their sin you must proceed under the leading of Holy Spirit's voice being careful to follow His lead. You will normally experience the enemy's voice telling you the whole time you are attempting to cast him out saying that he is not coming, but be steadfast in faith and command him out in the name, power, blood and authority of the Lord Jesus Christ!

Strongholds are a place that begins with the believer or unbeliever allowing sin to become stronger in his life because he has not dealt with it, but in fact has let it stay in order to feed it and give it ground so that the once warm and fuzzy sin has grown up into a murdering wild beast. By that time the person is in serious trouble and in danger of total destruction. There is an old saying that there are two wolves within you, the question being, which one is stronger? The answer: the one you feed!

For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war against the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled. II Corinthians 10:3-6

Those who sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, bound (prisoners) in affliction and irons because they rebelled against the words of God, and despised the counsel of the Most High. Psalm 107:10,11

We as believers in Christ are called to be like Him in all respects and to go about doing good and to heal all oppressed by the devil. We have His will, His power and His anointing to defeat and overcome the powers of darkness.

The hospitals and mental institutions are full, the drug rehabs are full and there are no beds, especially Christian ones, if you can find them. The world is dying and sin is running rampant with no help in sight, the earth is reeling with the effects of sin and death barreling down the bloodlines of millions of unsuspecting victims and darkness continues to cover the entire planet.

The answer to this pressing problem is for the body of Christ to wake up and train, equip and send it's people into the battle. The fivefold ministry is to equip the saints for war and service in the army of God and to set the many captives free, sadly, of whom many are themselves bound in chains and affliction. The time is now and the harvest is white with those who nobody wants, the drug addict, prostitute, lame blind and sick of this world.

To be able to set the captive free, one must loose him from his bondage by involving himself in spiritual warfare. In many cases the situation may look hopeless, but through prayer and fasting miraculous results can be obtained, remember Lazarus who was dead four days, it doesn't get any more hopeless than that and yet the Lord raised him up!

The word loose means to loosen one who is bound, to release from bonds, to set free and to dissolve. Normally you can see visually with your eyes what has a person bound or it will come out of his mouth being stored up in his heart. All one has to do in most cases is to listen and then the Holy Spirit will lead you to engage in warfare or not. I said not because you must be led by the Spirit in every case and not by human compassion or else you might be taking on something you are not able to defeat.

An individual cannot take on a principality, a prince over a territory, for these are reserved for the church to war against and only when they are in agreement, fully trained and willing to suffer the consequences of the counter attack. When David took on Goliath it was an Old Testament type of the fivefold ministry using the rock (five smooth stones) and the word of God being guided by Holy Spirit into the head of a major principality.

Keep in mind that even though the giant was killed, he had four brothers just as big and an evil hoard of Philistines hell bent on bringing about a counter attack on David for the loss of their champion and it continued throughout his life. Most today who engage in warfare are not able to withstand the counter attack that deliverance brings, even the church who because of their lack of training and diligence refuse to engage and end up rejecting the very ministry that Jesus gave them.

Therefore He brought down their heart with labor; they fell down and, and there was none to help. Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and He saved them out of their distresses. He brought them out of darkness and the shadows of death, and broke their chains in pieces. Psalm 107:12-14

Is this not the fast that I have chosen: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke? Isaiah 58:6
