For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ. II Corinthians 10:3-5
The mind of man is a battleground, the place where spiritual wars are won and lost, where our enemies attack and contend for our affection. Yes, contend for our affection, ultimately they want to destroy us but Satan is all too happy to just let us fall in love with something contrary to the will of God. It doesn't even have to be something evil, just time consuming, like ministry; many a man of God has fallen in love with the mistress of ministry, myself included, stealing our very devotion to God.
Remember Satan's attack on the first man, although directed at the first lady, Miss Eve, the temptation wasn't for evil in itself, it seemed harmless to eat of the fruit of a tree that God had given them to tend in His garden, problem being, God had commanded them not to eat from this specific tree! All the devil had to do was convince them that they had misunderstood God and that He would love for them to have some of the fruit of their labor, after all they had been in charge of tending the tree, so why not eat of it's fruit?
Satan said to the couple, "Has God said, you surely shall not die!" Even though God said to them, that if they ate of the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil they would surely die. Convinced Satan was right and God was misunderstood, they took of the fruit and ate, disobeying the commandment of God and they immediately died spiritually, along with all of mankind who would inherit the generational curse of sin!
Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am tempted by God;" for God cannot be tempted by evil nor does he Himself tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown brings forth death. Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. James 1:13-16
