But what does it say? "The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart," that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Romans 10:8-10
The above referenced scripture in Romans is where the "Sinner's prayer" originated, never meant to just be a little prayer that when recited that "poof" one somehow magically becomes a Christian as it has been taught in recent years. Actually this was being preached by Paul the apostle to the Romans out of the book of Deuteronomy and was never meant to be a prayer recited, but an oath of covenant between man and God!
There is nothing wrong with reciting a prayer as long as your heart is drawn by Holy Spirit, and you come to the knowledge that you are lost and without hope, although you will find no where in the New Testament anyone leading someone in a prayer, people were convicted of sin by the preaching of the gospel of Jesus Christ and cried out for mercy repenting of their sins and they received the Holy Spirit! In order for one to be born again and delivered from his sins, one must confess before the Father his sins and be willing to repent, or in other words turn away from his sin, believe in his heart that Jesus died, was buried and resurrected for us and that He is our only source of salvation.
To believe in your heart by faith that Jesus is your Savior will result in your right standing with God and to confess that Jesus is your Lord will result in your being saved by His grace. If you are lost and without hope and desperate for a life changing experience, then ask the Lord to forgive you and cleanse you of all unrighteousness and make Him the Lord and Master of your life, I guarantee you will never be the same!
"See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil. "In that I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments, His statutes, and His judgments, that you may live and multiply; and the Lord your God will bless you in the land which you go to possess. "But if your heart turns away so that you do not hear, and are drawn away, and worship other gods and serve them, "I announce to you today that you shall surely perish; you shall not prolong your days in the land which you cross over the Jordan to go in and possess. "I call Heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live." Deuteronomy 30:15-19
