But the fruit of the Spirit is self-control. Galatians 5:23
Controlling one's self in the midst of an out of control world is a formidable task to be sure. Self or the flesh has to be broken through trials, tests and the process of sanctification, initiated by the Holy Spirit. In order to control one's flesh one must walk in the Spirit.
The battle is in the mind where flaming missiles of lust, pride, greed, anger and selfish ambition, just to name a few, wage war in our members. Thoughts give birth to sin and sin brings forth spiritual death. Many of the natural attributes of man are inherited from our ancestors even back to the garden where our first forefather was tempted and fell into sin eons ago. The apostle Paul used an illustration of what the Romans would do as punishment by tying a dead body to a perfectly healthy human being. As the corpse would begin to rot, disease and decay would begin to kill the one who carried the body of death.
So it is as we also carry this body of the flesh along with our spiritual man, learning to put off the deeds of the flesh and walk in the Spirit on our journey to the cross of Christ. In order for a new believer to follow the Lord he will have to submit himself to crucify, or in other words, kill the flesh and walk in the Spirit with the Lord Jesus Christ, there is simply no other option.
And those who are Christ's, have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Galatians 5:24,25
