The Dynamics Of Deliverance

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. II Timothy 3:16,17

Deliverance is indeed a very good work and is necessary for the church to maintain peace, order and freedom, not only for her members but to set the captives of the world free from demonic strongholds. Jesus gave the believer all authority in His name over the powers of darkness and to heal diseases and His promise was that we would in no way be harmed. The key to having success in deliverance is the basic understanding of authority and how to operate in the power and leading of the Holy Spirit.

During some of my first experiences being trained by a man who had learned deliverance as most do by trial and error I was attempting to cast a demon out of a woman who was speaking through her in a man's voice. Being a little cocky and feeling very confident of my ability I commanded the demon to bow his knee before the Lord Jesus Christ and every time he would cry out, "No!" This went on three times when the Holy Spirit said to me, "He's bowed three times, what else do you want him to do?" At that point I knew that I had all authority over demons and learned from Holy Spirit's leading that I was not to converse with them any longer other than to command them out! Another valuable lesson learned from hundreds of hours of on the job training casting out thousands upon thousands of demons was the fact that it had nothing to do with my ability or knowledge, but by the leading of Holy Spirit in every circumstance and situation.

We would do well to follow the teachings of Jesus and the examples that He left us in the scriptures in regards to the casting out of demonic spirits. The power of the strength of numbers of people in unity provide greater success and like the old saying, "United we stand, divided we fall." Jesus began His ministry by choosing twelve apostles to train for service in His newly formed kingdom of Heaven on earth. These men were unlearned, uneducated blue collar workers who were about to learn the mysteries of the kingdom by observing the Lord Jesus as He proceeded to validate the power of kingdom authority before their very eyes by healing the sick, casting out demons and even raising the dead! The power and authority of the Christ, the anointed One was displaying the gifts and miracles given to His disciples to equip them to build up His kingdom in the earth.

"Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you." Luke 10:19

For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder, and His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end. Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom to order it and establish it with judgment and justice from that time and forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this. Isaiah 9:6,7"

The government of God is not a hierarchy of clergy divided into ranks of superiority, but an organic assembly of apostles sent to govern in the spiritual realm of prayer and intersession. Jesus chose twelve disciples who would become apostles sent to be His pillars to hold up the body of Christ by interceding, spiritual warfare and training in righteousness. Although the number twelve is the number of the government of God it is important to know that if one can put a thousand of the enemy to flight, and two, ten thousand, then twelve can put to flight one hundred trillion of the powers of darkness to flight. Pretty impressive I would say and yet we have ignored the pattern for power.

These twelve, although one was lost, Judas was replaced by Matthias and the reason being, Jesus was adamant about maintaining the number twelve to insure the strength and power to defend this new expression of His born again assembly of saints. The church of the Lord Jesus Christ today has to be able to fight against the powers of darkness sent to destroy their unity and defeat them in battle and their only hope of victory in these last days is to unify under the banner of the cross and fulfill their great commission to reap the harvest of the earth and make disciples of all nations according to the commands of Christ! Apostles, prophets, evangelists and pastors and teachers must begin to train the body for war and and send them into the harvest before its too late. Train, equip and send must become our war cry if we are to fulfill our destiny and build up the body of the risen Lord Jesus, King of all kings and Head of His called out, blood bought saints of the Most High God.

The twelve were sent out in two's to heal the sick and cast out demons and they multiplied into one hundred twenty as a result of their labor in preaching the gospel. They returned saying Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name, proving that they indeed had received His power and authority over the powers of darkness. Jesus had successfully trained these unlearned, uneducated common laborers in a very short time to walk in the power and authority of His name and to begin to fulfill the destiny of the most powerful entity in the universe, the church of Jesus Christ, Son of the living God!

"And these signs will follow those who have believed; in My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick and they will recover."

Then Jesus, being filled with the Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, being tempted for forty days by the devil. And in those days He ate nothing, and afterward when they had ended, He was hungry. And the devil said to Him. "If You are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread." Luke 4:1-3

Jesus had just been baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan river, saw the Holy Spirit descend upon Him in bodily form as a dove and heard His heavenly Father speak to Him in an audible voice saying, "This is My beloved Son in whom I am well pleased." Was there any doubt who this Man was and to whom He belonged, but the devil is no respecter of persons and had the audacity to say to Him, "If You are the Son of God command this stone to become bread." If the devil is so bold to attack the Son of God's position and authority what do you think he will try on you?

If Jesus had fallen prey to this diabolical scheme we would not be here today, "Game over!" The entire kingdom would have collapsed before it ever had a chance to survive because of the moral failure of the Last Adam, but indeed the Son of God knew who He was and was assured of who He belonged to. We would do well to observe this very important example of how Satan comes to deceive us by his craftiness in trying to convince us that we are not really sons of God! The very fact that you are to be convinced of who you are in Christ will determine your ability in the Spirit to defeat the enemies of God by the authority given you by the Lord Himself.

Christ in you is your only hope of glory, power and authority in performing the ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ today in the midst of a corrupt and perverse generation of lost sinners, hell bent on the destruction of their own souls by willfully sinning against a Holy God who gave His own Son to die for them and give them the choice of repenting and becoming born again believers in Christ! The choice is yours, stand and fight or turn and run, you have all you need to defeat the enemy and to be victorious in the things of God if you know who you are and understand the authority He has given you.

Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He might exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world. But may the God of all grace who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you. To Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen. I Peter 5:6-11

Your servant in Christ, Tim Laughlin
