THE NEW COVENANT OF COMMUNION
When the hour had come, He sat down, and the twelve apostles with Him. Then He said to them, "With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; for I say to you, I will no longer eat of it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God." Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, "Take this and divide it among yourselves; "for I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes." And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "do this in remembrance of Me." Likewise He took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood which is shed for you." Luke 22:14-20
Jesus was announcing to His apostles the beginning of a new covenant, inaugurated with His own blood! When He said to them, "do this in remembrance of Me," He wasn't telling them to remember what He looked like, or about the good times they had, or even the ministry He taught them, He was telling them and we who are His followers to remember the "New Covenant" that His upcoming death, burial and resurrection was to initiate!
After the celebration of the Passover with His newly trained apostles, He went into the Garden of Gethsemane to pray and under great stress and anguish of heart He sweat blood that began His journey to the cross. Jesus bled in seven places from the garden to Calvary giving us a perfect and complete sacrifice for our sins, iniquities and transgressions! When we partake of the cup we share in His suffering as joint heirs of eternal life in Him.
When we partake of the bread, we share in His body that was broken for us and through this supernatural communion, we as His disciples are healed, delivered and set free from sin, sickness, poverty, generational curses and death. When we became born again by the supernatural transformation of the washing in His blood we became One with Jesus, the Father and the Holy Spirit!
"I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect (complete) in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me." John 17:23
COMMUNION AND FELLOWSHIP
If we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. I John 1:7
Communion and fellowship come from the same Greek word, koinonia meaning fellowship, joint participation and to share with one in anything. It is our co-union with Christ, sharing not only His sufferings, but also His blessings and benefits.
The Lord's supper is the supernatural sharing of all the benefits of the finished works of Calvary! The seven places Jesus bled on His way to pay the ultimate price gave us everything promised in the new covenant: healing, deliverance, salvation, prosperity and freedom from the generational curse! The truth of this selfless act of mercy and grace afforded us great blessings and the outcome, eternal life!
Never a ritual, communion is a joyous time of sharing in all that the Lord Jesus has done for us as joint heirs of eternal life in Him! Originally a love feast for the body of Christ it is meant to be a time of great blessing for us all!
The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion/fellowship of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion/fellowship of the body of Christ? For we who are many, are one bread and one body; for we all partake of that one bread. I Corinthians 10:16,17
THE BREAD OF LIFE
"I am the bread of life. "Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and are dead. "This is the bread which comes down from Heaven, that one may eat of it and not die. "I am the living bread which came down from Heaven. If anyone eats of this bread he will live forever and the bread that I shall give is My flesh which I shall give for the life of the world." John 6:48-51
In order to eat the "Bread of Life" one has to assimilate that which we receive from the Lord Jesus who is the Bread! When we eat physical, natural food we chew it to get the flavor from it and then it is assimilated into our body creating nourishment that in turn gives life, so it is with the supernatural bread, we assimilate the nourishment of God's word and it gives spiritual life!
Communion doesn't save us, it rejuvenates us and reminds us of the covenant we are partakers of. The Jews wear phylactery's, small leather boxes containing scripture attached to their hair seen out of the corner of their eyes to remind them of God's law, but we have the covenant of the Lord Jesus written in our hearts as a reminder of His great love for us!
Remember, when you partake of the bread and drink of the cup you are proclaiming the Lord's death, burial and resurrection and you are sharing in all the benefits of His blood covenant in which we entered upon our salvation experience, by giving our lives as a sacrifice to Him! We have been bought with a price, the precious blood of a pure and holy Lamb slain for us, making us One with Him in covenant forever!
But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises. Hebrews 8:6
