But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. I Corinthians 11: 3
Submission has always been a sticky subject in the Body of Christ with everyone jockeying for position, and wanting to be the leader of the flock and the king of the mountain. Human nature says we ought to lead and not follow and to always come out on top. The American way is competition and sadly it has found its way into the Church.
The Body of Christ is a copy of the natural body of man and God uses this illustration to teach us how the spiritual body should function under the proper headship. Because of religious tradition we have been taught that a man is to lead the body, and there are human leaders, but they must be in complete submission to the head, Jesus Christ.
In the natural human body all the members and parts take their orders from the brain, the head of man, all have specific functions, but all take direction from one source, the head. For instance the heart pumps blood to the rest of the body and is one of the most important parts, but it is only designed for one function, to pump blood. What if the heart decided to become a lung and breathe air and give up its proper function? I can tell you the body would die instantly because the heart did not submit itself to the head.
Every part of the human body functions independently from one another, but in total submission to one another, though they take direction from the head. Each part has to be in complete submission to the head and each other in order to insure the proper working of the body. So it is in the Body of Christ, each member takes direction from the Holy Spirit, but each member has a specific function in the body.
There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all. I Corinthians 12: 4-7
Everyone in the Body of Christ has a part to play in maintaining a healthy relationship with one another and the Head. Everyone is responsible to have a relationship with Jesus Christ and to commune with the Father. When communication from the brain is cut off from a particular part in the natural body it causes paralysis, so it is in Christ's body if one member is not hearing and operating naturally the whole body will suffer. Take for instance when you stub your toe, all of a sudden this becomes the most important part of your body because it is producing pain thus effecting your whole body.
PROPER LEADERSHIP UNDER SUBMISSION TO THE HEAD
Every man praying or prophesying having his head covered, dishonors his head. But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, for that is one and the same as if her head was shaved.
For if a woman is not covered, let her also be shorn. But if it is shameful for a woman to be shorn or shaved, let her be covered. For a man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man.
For man is not from woman, but woman from man. Nor was man created for the woman, but woman for the man. For this reason the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head because of the angels. II Corinthians 11: 4-10
The above referenced scriptures have been taken literally by the church to mean that a woman must wear a head covering, but Paul is explaining that for someone to be out of spiritual order would be as shameful as a woman shaving her head. In the Garden of Eden Adam allowed his wife Eve to step out from his spiritual covering and negotiate with the devil, the result being that all of mankind fell out of spiritual order.
Spiritual headship is not meant for hierarchy, but for anointing, blessing and protection. As we line up under our proper covering under Jesus Christ our entire family will line up under us and the result will be amazing grace! Remember verse 10 said that a woman needs a symbol of authority on her head because of the angels. These ministering spirits give us protection from the enemy unless we step out of our divine order of spiritual headship.
The Lord showed me an example of what the church would look like under the proper headship. I saw a tent similar to an old circus tent with one pole in the center and twelve poles arranged in a circle holding up the curtains, the top or head pole holding up the ceiling of the tent. The twelve poles represented the leadership of the church while the top covered the entire church thus allowing the anointing to flow down upon the whole body. When we line up and follow the divine design we will see great outpourings of power and a harvest of souls promised for the last days church.
And He gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; that we should no longer be children tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, but speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head- Christ, from whom the whole body joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love. Ephesians 4: 11-16
If something is covering you other than Jesus Christ such as a denomination, organization or a man, you need to repent and let the Lord become your head again and allow the blessings of God to begin to flow into your life. You are a priest of God if you are born again and have every right to come into His presence. There is one body, one faith and one Head, the Lord Jesus Christ. Submit to His headship and be blessed!
Now may the God of peace who brought up our Lord Jesus from the dead, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant make you complete in every good work to do His will, working in you what is well pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever, Amen. Hebrews 13: 20,21
