Spiritual Gifts, Part III
For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit. I Corinthians 12:8
The first gift is the word of wisdom given to us by the Holy Spirit, as all the gifts are so distributed. The wisdom of God is infinite, unlike human wisdom that has to be accumulated through years of trial and error, God's wisdom is available to us now for us to use wherever there is the need to know.
As in the operation of all the gifts, faith must be employed in order for one to be able to use this most important tool in our endeavor to hear from the very throne of God. The person with the word of wisdom is like a man who has access to the largest computer in the world, holding all the volumes of the wisdom of God's mind, an unfathomable reservoir of everything ever created, including the scriptures which hold a vast sum of wise instruction in themselves.
King Solomon asked God for this most valuable gift to be given to him and it so pleased God to allow Him His wisdom. In one instance where Solomon used this gift was when two women came to him accusing each other of killing one of their children in the night and sought possession of the remaining child. Solomon listened to their story and then called for a sword to be brought to him in which he would divide the child in half, giving both women an equal part, immediately one women cried out, no, please give the child to the other women and so Solomon knew which lady the child belonged to, the one who cried out!
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. James 1:5-8
