TO OBEY IS BETTER THAN SACRIFICE

Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, He also has rejected you from being king. I Samuel 13:22,23

Israel clamored for a king to rule over them much like today, men want a fleshly monarch instead of the King of all kings to lead them because their hearts are not right before God. Saul was a tall, handsome man, a keeper of donkeys from the tribe of Benjamin chosen to be anointed king over God's people, but he did not have a heart after God.

At this time in Israel God appointed judges to rule over the people and to hear their complaints and concerns, but they didn't want the prophet Samuel or his sons judging them, they wanted a king and they said to him, "Make us a king to judge us like all the nations!" Although this was greatly displeasing to the Lord because they rejected Him, He gave them Saul and told Samuel to anoint him king over His people.

This was a grave mistake for Israel to desire to be like the world with a king and a fleshly kingdom instead of the kingdom of Heaven come to earth! Today, believers have chosen a man like Saul to be their President, an arrogant and selfish individual who does not have a heart after God and is only concerned with pleasing the conservative right so that he can get re-elected instead of pleasing God! That's not to say that God didn't put him in to destroy the corrupt left!

Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father but is of the world. I John 2:15,16

DISOBEDIENCE BRINGS ABOUT JUDGMENT

Now go and attack Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and do not spare them. But kill both man and woman, infant and nursing child, ox and sheep, camel and donkey. I Samuel 15:3

Amalek is a type and shadow of the powers of darkness (demons) that come against us when we sin and rebel against the command of the Lord to destroy the works of the flesh and repent of the willful sin that has brought judgment upon us as it did with Saul!

God's command was simple, direct and to the point, "Destroy all!" But Saul didn't obey, instead keeping the best of the spoils and by taking the king of the Amalekites captive. His excuse was, he was going to sacrifice the spoils to God, which in God's eyes would be like robbing a bank and giving the money as an offering to Him!

We have been given a command to repent of willful sin so that we can be set free from the powers of darkness that attach themselves to our sin and come to rob, kill and to destroy our lives! There is no forgiveness for willful sin, only judgment and demons carry out the judgment!

For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, their no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, (the blood of Jesus) but a terrifying expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation (Hell) which will devour the adversaries. Hebrews 10:26,27

AN EVIL SPIRIT SENT FROM GOD

But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit (demon) from God troubled him. And Saul's servants said to him, "Surely an evil spirit from God is troubling you." I Samuel 16:14,15

This is a direct result of willful disobedience and the reason people are demonized! Saul disobeyed the command of the Lord and the judgment of God fell upon him! Demons carry out the judgment of God, being His instruments of indignation. Ref. Isaiah 13:4,5

Saul went from being a divinely appointed leader of God's people to a demonized, depraved malcontent who hated the Most High's newly appointed king, David, who was sent to minister to him. Saul's mission in life was to destroy David and at the end of his dismal life, bereft of God's Spirit he ended up going to a medium, the witch of Endor to have a seance to call up Samuel for his advice on the upcoming battle in which Saul and his sons were killed!

As the apostle Paul told the church at Corinth, "These things happened to Israel as examples, and were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come." We would do well to observe the behavior of Saul and beware of any disobedience that would lead us into willful sin and the love and lust for the things of the world!

Adulterers! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity (ill will) with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. James 4:4
