Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in Him. I John 2:15
This scripture seems to contradict what John 3:16 states about God loving the world and sending His Son to die for it, but it speaks of God loving the people of the world and not the world system. The world is not the birds and bees and flowers and trees, the world that John says not to love is a system of business, government, entertainment, media, family, education and even religion, sometimes referred to as the seven cultural mountains.
When one comes to Christ he is drawn away from these worldly pursuits to follow his Lord in obedience to the leading of Holy Spirit's voice. It is not unusual for one to give up all his possessions, livelihood and even family to follow the Lord Jesus as His disciples did. Many today in the Middle East are totally rejected from their families when they become believers and even threatened with death from their own family members! In America however, Christianity has been watered down and people are made to believe that to be a follower of Christ is to become healthy, wealthy and wise, or in other words, a success in this world, something diametrically opposed to the teaching of the scriptures.
For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not from the Father but is of the world. I John 2:16
The Spirit draws us to set our minds on heavenly things and the flesh tempts us to lust after the world and those things the world loves, and the result is a spiritual war! When we come to Christ we are crucified to the world and we become new creations, born from above to live and walk in the Spirit and not according to the traditions of the world. We are no longer in bondage to those things that once seduced us and captured our hearts. When Moses led the children of Israel out of Egypt through the Red Sea it was a type of baptism and when they reached the other side they were delivered from the world and their enemies were defeated!
Revelation 17:9 speaks of "Babylon the Great the Mother of Harlots" sitting on seven mountains, Babylon being symbolic of the world and the mountains, that which the world system consists of. The Bible speaks of those who love the world as adulterers and adulteresses who have left their first love, the Lord Jesus Christ and gone a whoring after the world! We as the body of the living Lord Jesus are to be separate from the world system and we are to put our trust in God alone for our provision and our livelihood, for He is our life and the source of our very existence.
Therefore, "Come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, and I will receive you." "I will be a Father to you, and you shall be My sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty." II Corinthians 6:17,18
