Jesus Nailed It!

And you being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. Colossians 2:13,14

When someone nails it, it means they have hit the target, made the basket, touchdown, goal or took the shot and scored! In regards to the Lord Jesus, He took our infirmities, sins, sicknesses, curses and the law of the commandments and doctrines of men and nailed them to the cross! In other words He nailed it!

The apostle Paul was addressing legalism in the church as he reminded them that the Lord Jesus Christ had taken it to the cross. Legalism is the excessive conformity to the law or to a religious order, or moral code. Most of the religions of the world are founded upon works and promote the idea that man has to perform for his god in order to obtain his favor. Even Christianity is stained with the works of the flesh and the man-made, man-centered philosophy that God helps them who help themselves. Legalism is like being on a treadmill of works that always leads to bondage, but grace is an escalator that leads upward from glory to glory!

We are saved by grace, the un-merited favor and merciful gift given to those who would accept it and turn away from an evil lifestyle of sin and rebellion. Once we have confessed and forsaken our sins the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ washes away all of our transgressions, iniquities and sicknesses and according to His word has placed them as far away from us as the East is from the West! We have been freed from the dominion that sin once held in our lives and we were healed of all sickness, disease and infirmity as Jesus bled out on the cross.

Jesus bled in seven specific places from the time He agonized in the garden to His fateful bloodstained journey to the cross of Calvary for all of us. Every sin and transgression and all sickness was placed upon the perfect sacrifice of the Lamb of God giving us all a perfect and complete deliverance. No more works, no more dead ritualistic worship, no more human mediators or lifeless traditions to follow, we were freed from the bonds of man-made religion forever! The veil of separation dividing man from the Father of lights was torn from top to bottom signifying our right to come boldly to the throne of grace without the aid of man!

Beware lest anyone cheat (plunder or take you captive) through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principals of the world, and not according to Christ. Colossians 2:8

So let no one judge you in food or drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ. Colossians 2:16,17

Have you ever felt guilty for not going to church, not reading your Bible enough or praying enough? This could be the guilt that legalism produces or it could be the conviction of the Holy Spirit's voice, you have to decide. Non the less, legalism will bring about guilt and shame for not performing religious duties and can bring about the creation of a stronghold in a person's life.

I have seen many a man and woman bound by a spirit of legalism which in fact is a religious spirit that drains the spiritual life out of its victims. Performance in the form of works, the wearing of certain clothing, head covers, proclaiming to be an exclusive remnant and the like which have absolutely no value in regards to pleasing God or making one more righteous. Grace has set us free from the bonds of legalism and law and allows us freedom to worship God in Spirit and truth and not in form and ritual. All of these rules and regulations were nailed to the cross, never to be revisited by a people freed from the bondage of religion!

The apostle Peter, who spent over three years with the Lord Himself being trained for service even fell into legalism trying to get the Gentiles circumcised, abstaining from pork and finally had to have a vision from God set him free from his foolishness, proclaiming all foods clean including fellowship with Gentiles! Today Gentiles are trying to be Jewish by wearing prayer shawls, calling Jesus Yeshua, abstaining from foods and trying to keep the Sabbath, all to no avail and the apostle Paul was adamant about the Gentiles not being led into this deception. Another fallacy is stating that the King James Bible is the inspired word of God even superseding Hebrew and Greek which is absurd to think that a later translation is more accurate than the original text.

O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you that you should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed among you as crucified? This only I want to learn from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh? Galatians 3:1-3

Therefore, if you died with Christ from the basic principles of the world, why as though living in the world, do you subject yourselves to regulations- "Do not touch, do not taste, do not handle," which all concern things which perish with the using-according to the commandments and doctrines of men? Colossians 2:20-22

Thou shalt not this, or thou shalt not that has been removed from the wall containing the commandments of men and has been placed in our heart for the Holy Spirit to bring about conviction when we truly sin against God. When one breaks the law of God Holy Spirit brings about a conviction that is attached to our conscience that produces a godly sorrow and leads us to repentance, not a list of do's and don'ts!

The apostle Paul said in Romans 8:7 that he would not have known sin except through the law, for he would not have known covetousness unless the law had said, "You shall not covet." In other words the Spirit brought about conviction to Paul's heart reminding him about the law of God. The law has been fulfilled by the death, burial and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ and when He said that you shall love the Lord your God with all of your heart and so it is placed within us by the Holy Spirit as a compass to direct us into righteousness.

In conclusion we have been set free and made righteous through the grace and mercy of God's supreme act of kindness through the death of His Son on the cross and we are no longer in bondage to self-imposed religion and tradition. As priests of the Most High we are free to come before the King, made righteous by the blood and cleansed from all sin to serve Him with a pure heart because Jesus nailed it!

These things indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed religion, false humility and neglect of the body, but are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh. Colossians 2:23
