But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” Luke 10:29
The answer to that question is: Everyone! Every person on the planet, including our enemies are our neighbors. To illustrate, Jesus told the lawyer about a good Samaritan who stopped to help someone who had been stripped and robbed, laying naked and bleeding in the road!
Today, most would pass this guy by and a couple of religious folks did just that, a priest and a Levite, probably had an important meeting to attend! But a Samaritan stopped and not only attended to his wounds but put him in an inn and paid for his entire recovery! This is how I began my ministry in the Lord by putting hopeless addicts in a Motel 6 on I-35 and casting the demons out of them, 40 years ago!
My first ministry was in the streets giving to any who were in need: drug addicts, prostitutes and the down and outers of this world that eventually led me into residential ministry! This is the ministry of the true church of Jesus Christ, laying down one's own life for another. This is the agape love Jesus was speaking of, loving your neighbor as yourself!
So which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?” And he said, “He who showed mercy on him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.” Luke 10:36,37
