To another discerning of spirits. I Corinthians 12:10

In Philippi a slave girl is being used by her owners as a seer or fortune teller. The young woman is possessed by a demon who quite accurately identifies Paul and Silas as "slaves of the Most High God" who have come to reveal "a way of salvation." What is remarkable is the accuracy and understanding of the possessing spirit.

But whatever the nature of the spirit, it accurately identifies who Paul and his companions are and what their mission is. Yet, it can be cast out by a mere mortal who relies on the power of God. By casting the less powerful demon out of the girl, Paul witnesses the power of the God he worships. The discerning of spirits is a gift that can be learned by studying the word of God and by listening to what is coming out of a person's mouth, remember whatever is in a man's heart comes out of his mouth!

Paul discerned what spirit was in the slave girl by what she was doing, practicing divination, and so he proceeded to cast it out. Fortune tellers, diviners, mediums and sorcerers all have this spirit and it can be a deadly end for those deceived by it! My former wife used to visit a witch in Dallas named Johnny Bell long before I was saved and it gave out accurate information on the market, so many businessmen went to her. One day she told my wife that she saw her father-in-law with a red cross on his chest. Not long after that my father got lung cancer and when I visited him in the hospital I walked in and he had a red cross on his chest where they were giving him radiation!

Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling. This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, “These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation.” And this she did for many days. But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And he came out that very hour. Acts 16:16-18
