THE FEAR OF THE LORD
And he went into all the regions around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. Luke 3:3
John the Baptist was a forerunner of the Lord Jesus Christ, but as some think because we are New Testament believers that somehow the wrath of God disappeared and the fear of the Lord is not required, we have settled for a lukewarm religion of complacency and dead ritual.
The message John was preaching would be foreign today to a religious crowd who want their ears tickled and those who were coming for John's baptism were no different, wanting another dead religious service! Repentance means to turn around and go the other way, to change your mind about your lifestyle and to forsake your sin, without which you cannot be forgiven!
When the multitudes came out to be baptized, John wanted them to feel welcomed and comfortable like we do today in our church services by saying to them, "Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?" Not exactly seeker-friendly, wanting to fill the church with big tithers, but effective in separating the wheat from the tares!
"Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance, and do not say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father, 'For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones.' "And even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore every tree which does not bear fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire." Luke 3:8,9
