THE FEAR OF THE LORD

"Thus says the Lord: 'Behold, I will raise up adversity against you from your own house; and I will take your wives before your eyes and give them to your neighbor, and he shall lie with your wives in the sight of the sun. 'For you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel, before the sun.' " II Samuel 12:11,12

Sin has it's consequences and David certainly was going to get his share of them for such a heinous crime of passion and murder! For a king to commit both adultery and murder was certain death according to the law of Moses and yet God spared his life and forgave him, although the consequences would soon follow him to the grave.

It is interesting that David's own son, Solomon said in the book of Ecclesiastes, "Because the sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil." In other words when men sin and are not immediately judged they think they have somehow escaped God's judgment, but that is simply not true! The wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Romans 1:18

Throughout the remainder of David's life he was humbled, mocked, threatened by his own son to take his throne, daughter raped, sons killed and even as he was forced to leave his kingdom, his son ravished his wives on the rooftop for all the world to see, and a man running alongside them hurled rocks and abuse toward David, but he would not stop him, believing he was deserving of the attack.

So David said to Nathan, "I have sinned against the Lord," And Nathan said to David, "The Lord also has put away your sin; you shall not die. "However, because by this deed you have given great occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme, the child also who is born to you shall surely die." II Samuel 12:13,14
