LOVE

"Therefore I say to you, "Do not worry about your life, what you will eat; nor about the body, what you will put on. "Life is more than food, and the body is more than clothing." Luke 12:22,23

Imagine waking up to a home filled with women, a sizable overhead, no salary, and no visible means of support! Praise God! All I can say is He is faithful! With a few years of walking by faith, I was prepared to trust God because He had never let me down before and I didn't think He was going to start now!

One of the greatest teachings I had ever heard was in the autobiography of George Mueller, a German man who was saved and set free from a rebellious life and eventually became a pastor who made a vow to never ask anyone for money, he was going to trust God and believe Him for all his needs! George saw a need in England to start an orphanage for children who were rescued from the workhouses and off the city streets.

George found a suitable home for lease, prayed in the staff, silverware, beds, linens, kitchen utensils, literally everything needed to supply the home. On opening day with everything ready, George and the staff waited patiently for the children to come but no one showed up! Perplexed, George cried out to the Lord asking why no children came and the Lord said to him, "You didn't pray for children!" The next day the home was filled with excited kids and George was on his way!

"Consider the ravens, for they neither sow nor reap, which have neither storehouse nor barn; and God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds?" Luke 12:24

LOVE

Through wisdom, a house is built, and by understanding it is established; by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches. Proverbs 24:3,4

The story of the Good Samaritan pretty well explains residential ministry, but to the worldly eye, why in the world would anyone want to fill a home with a bunch of women who for the most part were rebellious sinners, drug addicts and prostitutes? Because these are the true riches of the kingdom, the jewels in your crown!

As I said, the board was mostly wealthy businessmen and always looked at the bottom line, although they were missing the point when it came to true profit! The women's home was a loser in the eyes of those who didn't have a heart for the unlovely, the true riches of the kingdom given to those who have eyes to see. The board met weekly and I had heard enough of their grumbling about the expenses of the women's home so I made them a proposal.

I told them if they would pay my salary (the only one I took in 40 years) and pay the lease on the Sherman House for six months I would take the ministry and raise our own support. They all said yes and so they kicked us out from the dock to sail the seas of humanity on our own with Jesus! Who, by the way is all we need! When the first rolled around I went to the accountant's office to pick up my salary and the rent when he told me in essence, "The divorce is final!" ADIOS! So we left, dusted our feet, and sailed on in Jesus mighty name!

Deliver those who are drawn toward death, and hold back those stumbling to the slaughter. If you say, "Surely we did not know this." Does He who weighs the hearts consider it? He who keeps your soul, does He not know it? And will He not render to each man according to his deeds?

LOVE

A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, loving favor rather than silver and gold. Proverbs 22:1

We moved into the Sherman House and continued the work of ministry until we grew and had 30-35 ladies in the program. Our staff consisted of a Christ for the Nations graduate from Jamaica and a Teen Challenge graduate. Although we were always understaffed we some how managed with God's grace and mercy.

One day a lady came in wanting to be staff and at the same time a girl who escaped from a satanic cult in Austin arrived. The girl explained that she had to leave everything she owned and wanted someone to go with her to retrieve her belongings, so I told the lady wanting to be staff to take her to Austin and get her stuff, a seemingly dangerous trip for a novice but she was full of zeal and up for the adventure.

Praise God she came back, mission accomplished, and she became our new staff member! There was always something going on in a residential ministry, especially with women but the staff with the help of the Holy Spirit worked it out. Things were going great, except there was a storm brewing in the distance, the board of directors who met once a week were becoming increasingly critical of the women's center, grumbling about expenses, even though most of them were wealthy businessmen!

A prudent man foresees evil and hides himself, but the simple pass on and are punished. By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches and honor and life. Proverbs 22:3,4

LOVE

And you will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all of your heart. Jeremiah 29:13

I will admit living in a funeral home was pretty creepy for the ladies and the little English pastor didn't help matters either always being underfoot, it was like the Addam's family! When we first moved in I wondered why the cabinets in the kitchen were so big and then I realized that's where they stored the bodies when it was a funeral home!

Every morning the ladies would walk with staff through the neighborhood and there was a beautiful hundred year old house that they passed that was vacant and for sale so they all began to pray that God would provide it for the ministry. I called the owner and asked if we could lease the home because we were not in a position to buy it, but he declined. One morning the ladies noticed water running out the front door so I called the owner and come to find out the pipes had frozen and broke.

It wasn't long before the owner called me and said he would lease the house and so God had made a way because of the ladies's prayers and we moved in! It was amazing to see the power of God move on their behalf and provide. When we were at the farm there were many times we didn't have much food and people would just show up bringing whatever the ladies were praying for. Glory to God!

I will be found by you, says the Lord, and I will bring you back from your captivity. Jeremiah 29:14

LOVE

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11

After our first attempt with the seven ladies who left we continued to labor in God's field, persevering through many trials and tribulations but also bearing fruit and learning how to create stability in the ministry. We were not supported by Teen Challenge and had to raise our own support as well as pray for our needs to be met! There were many miracles of provision!

Two years passed and a door opened in Sherman Texas to come up and open a full-term Teen Challenge women's center and I went up and spied out the land. We met with their board and went over the details and I went back to meet with my board, we prayed and it was off to the races! The group that made up the board were all wealthy businessmen and they already had a men's ministry in Bonham.

We moved into an old funeral home converted to a ministry and a church with a creepy English pastor! I began to see that men wanted to have a fruitful residential ministry but didn't want to get their hands dirty, always telling me how glad they were that God had called me to do it! We attended a large wealthy Assembly of God church along with the men's ministry and had to go to the church at the funeral home as well, so it was three times on Sunday. At least the ladies got a nap during the creepy pastor's sermon! Needless to say, God had another plan!

Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me and I will listen to you. Jeremiah 29:12

LOVE

There is a way that seems right to a man, (or a woman) but its end is the way of death. Proverbs 16:25

You would think when someone is presented with the gospel that they would be overjoyed that God has made a way for us all to be saved, set free, and delivered from the wrath of God! But, it was amazing how many over the years rejected it, many for a cigarette, some for sex, and others for drugs and alcohol! Even going back to jail instead of being in a program that would change their lives!

One little girl, not in age but in stature was cute as a bug and even kept my grand-child, ended up leaving, involved herself in a three-way with her boyfriend and another girl, but became jealous and she and her lover bound, gagged and drowned the third party in a local lake and ended up in prison for murder! It simply boils down to this: unless someone is desperate to change their life there is not much hope for that person. Later in ministry when we dealt with men, a guy said to me that it depends on "How big is your want to?" In other words how bad do you want to change your life?

One of the first ladies to come into the program was a prostitute who I thought wanted to follow Jesus and change her life but decided one day she wanted heroin over the Lord and left. I pleaded with her and told her she would get AIDS if she shot up and sure enough the first needle she shared with a man gave her the deadly virus! I have kept up with her all these years, affectionately naming her "Hammerhead" and I got a call one day that she had been knifed and was in the hospital. I went down to see her and saw a gaping wound in her throat where a guy cut her with a roofing knife, but she recovered, eventually turning back to the Lord and is now married and serving God! She has had AIDS all of these years but with a cocktail of meds is still active and is as well as can be expected! Praise God!

LOVE

"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." Matthew 28:19

After I was approached by the directors of Teen Challenge to become their induction center and made a thirty-day mission trip to the Philippines we were ready to begin as Manna Farms and my vision to make disciples was becoming a reality!

If anyone tells you that making disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ is easy, that person has never been involved in it or knows anything about what it entails! I was about to learn for myself what it meant as we took in the first seven ladies into the program. We had three mobile homes for the women's center and I lived in the home at the front of the twenty-acre farm. Now consider, most of the women we received were either former prostitutes, topless dancers, drug addicts, alcoholics, or felons stipulated to us as a condition of their parole.

On day two I looked out my back door and my little Blue Healer, Rodeo was standing there with a dress in his mouth and I knew this was not going to be a good day! Needless to say the whole bunch, all seven walked a mile for a camel! No, actually they walked more than five miles so they could smoke! Anyway, I learned a valuable lesson pertaining to residential ministry, "Stability!"

"Teaching them to observe all things I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Matthew 28:20

LOVE

For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding. Colossians 1:9

David Wilkerson was a man I looked up to and admired his spirit and his zeal for the gospel of Jesus Christ, Pastor of Times Square Church, founder of Teen Challenge and author of numerous books such as The Cross and the Switchblade, he was a true prophet and man of God!

After a tour one day through the ministry of Teen Challenge of Ft. Worth, an adult women's program I was inspired to go into residential ministry. Our first attempt was a home for un-wed mothers where I gained insight, wisdom and knowledge of what my true destiny was and the desire God was burning in my heart! We worked with unwed mothers and saw many beautiful babies who would have otherwise been murdered through abortion and we took several women from Teen Challenge when the Directors paid me a visit at the farm.

The two Directors told me they liked what they saw with our work with the women they had sent us and asked me to become their induction center. Praise God, I said, whats an induction center? They then proceeded to tell me that I would take everyone who came into their program, get them saved, delivered and filled with the Spirit and then send them downtown to finish the one year program in two months! Having much more zeal than wisdom I said, "Sure no problem!"

That you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God. Colossians 1:10

LOVE

And Jesus said, "I was watching Satan fall like lightning from Heaven. "Behold, I give you (disciples) the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and overall the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you." Luke 10:18,19

I have seen many strange demonic manifestations on my journey and as word got out that I cast out demons, many were sent to me by churches for deliverance. It seemed really sad to me that these churches, some rather large didn't have anyone who knew how to cast out a demon! I literally became the "Garbage man of the church!"

After the training I received at the mission and with Milt in deliverance the Lord provided a twenty acre farm in Springtown,Texas and I began to pray about what God wanted us to do in ministry. An elder from our home church sent his adopted daughter out to live with us who was spoiled stinkin rotten to the point of being demonic. One day she and I were going into town as I questioned her about her life and her behavior when she began to manifest and a demon within her grabbed the steering wheel and tried to run us off the road.

When we got back to the farm I used an old remedy for delivering adolescents from demonic possession. I took off my western belt and gave her a good old fashioned "Whoopin!" I called her father and told him what happened and that I gave her a spanking she would never forget and he was ecstatic! The young lady grew up, got married and has children of her own, Praise God!

LOVE

And when He had come out of the boat, immediately there met Him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no one could bind him, not even with chains. Mark 5:2,3

Please understand that I am telling these testimonies of God's grace as it happened without embellishing anything and I am giving you the good, bad and the ugly! Ministry is not always clean and nice but sometimes resembles an operating room!

Jesus had met a man with a legion (over 5000) of demons running naked in the graveyard cutting himself and with supernatural strength, breaking steel chains. I have seen a 16-year-old girl pick up a copy machine with one hand and many other demonic feats of strength on my journey. The boy I will tell you about was found by a friend who saw him jumping out in front of cars in order to beg money from those who almost ran over him! He was a real nut job, totally demonized! His name was Scott.

At this time before we opened any residential ministry I would refer men to Teen Challenge, one of the largest and most successful Christian rehabs in the world founded by David Wilkerson. I arranged to have Scott transferred to Amarillo and my pastor, Brother Jesse and I went to pick him up at a motel where we found him laying on the curb naked as a jaybird wearing only a towel. We got him dressed and went to the bus station where he disappeared into the night, so we looked all over for him, when all of a sudden he jumped out of the bushes holding his hands together like he had a gun in front of Jesse who almost had a heart attack!

We finally got him settled down and went out to meet the bus and when he was about to get on, he told the bus driver he was Charles Manson and the driver said, "I'm not taking him anywhere!" We put him in the car and went back to the motel and on the way he opened the door pretending to jump out when I reached into the back seat to help him when Jesse calmed me down. My maturity level wasn't very high yet! We were never able to help this boy and I don't know what ever happened to him although Jesse got a check in the mail from him not long after that for a million dollars, the check, obviously was no good!

LOVE

Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails. I Corinthians 13:4-8

Not to get to far off the theme of love by the testimonies of my journey with Jesus, I must tell you that my exploits of healing, deliverance and miracles were motivated by the love God that He put in my heart and when I received the baptism in the Holy Spirit it caused a supernatural explosion that allowed me to love the unlovely!

Newly baptized with power from on high I was being mentored by Milton Green in the ministry of deliverance and spent hours casting out demons as I learned how they got into people and through the power of God, how to get them out! One day when confronted by a demon speaking out of a woman in a deep male voice I became a little cocky wanting to prove my authority and so I commanded the demon to bow his knee before the Lord Jesus Christ and three times he said NO! Perplexed by my lack of power the Holy Spirit said, "He's bowed three times, what else do you want him to do?"

I'm glad God has a sense of humor because that encouraged me greatly to know that we do indeed have all power and authority over our enemies! Then one night a friend came over and told me that the Spirit told him to have me anoint him with oil and so I did and then He said for my friend to anoint me also and then the phone rang. It was a man in the church who had one foot in the world and was trying to live the Christian life, but was double-minded. The man cried out for help and then began to growl like a wild beast and then hung up!

We immediately drove over to his home, got out and looked in the window and there saw the man lying on his back on the floor as a demon was tossing him up in the air supernaturally! We looked at each other wanting to run but the Holy Spirit prompted us to enter and the man jumped up on all fours and growled at us. I immediately grabbed the phone and called Milt for help. He answered the phone and I told him what was going on and he said, "Call me when it's over, click!" We then grabbed the man and threw him on the couch and cast demons out of him for four hours until he was as limp as a dishrag! Praise God!

Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, "Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name." Luke 10:17

LOVE

"And I will say to my soul, "Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink and be merry." ' Luke 12:19

Whistle, my friend and running buddy was quite a character, and was up for anything as he would say to us, "Let's get it!" He called me Mad Dog, why, I don't know because I was a sweet boy! Whistle was something else, he inherited his dad's western store, Ryon's Western Wear down in the stockyards, had a beautiful wife and family, and a large house on Eagle Mountain lake.

But, like me he had an affinity for sex, drugs and rock and roll and his passion, gambling, in which he lost most of his wealth and his wife's in Vegas. There were many times she would have to bail him out and eventually they split up and he was left to his own device! About the time he begin to lose his wealth I got saved and set free from a $2000 a week cocaine addiction. One rainy day I went down to the sleazy apartment he was living in and met him coming out and I said to him, "I have something to tell you!"

We went back in and I proceeded to tell him how God had saved me and set me free from drugs and told him He would do the same for him! He looked at me with tears in his eyes and said, "Mad Dog, I know what you are saying is true, but I am having too much fun!" That was the last time I saw him alive, as a month or so after our visit he was coming home one night and lost control of his Suburban and it threw him out, rolling over him and crushed his body! His wife called me at 4:00 am and I went to the hospital where he was on life support, unconscious and clinically dead. A nurse came in that I knew from church and said, "The hearing is the last to go!" The Lord spoke and said, "Lead him to me!" So I proceeded to lead him to Jesus by faith and he died!

"But God said to him, "Fool! This night your soul is required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?" "So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God." Luke 12:20,21

LOVE

"A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks." Luke 6:45

Wesley was a different breed of cat, another Lake Worth hood, who also went down for killing a man in a knife fight. Everyone liked Wesley, especially the ladies, why, I will never know why they like evil men! The one's who liked him called him "Super Wes!"

Ole Wesley was a fighter and would hit a man before he ever knew it was coming and maybe the only man I knew was going to Hell! Even when I was lost I had the ability to see past a man's behavior and was the "Last to let Wesley down!" Literally. Wesley had always said he wouldn't live past fifty and so it came to pass. One day I got a call on my car phone from Wesley asking me to marry he and a lady he had met and so I went over to her house and interviewed them knowing he was marrying her for her money!

I agreed to marry them because I wanted to try and reach them along with my old drug dealer who was at the wedding. When I got there Wesley was so drunk he couldn't hardly stand up and as I led them in the vows when we got to the part about obey, the lady said, "I ain't gonna obey!" so we skipped that part and proceeded! Hardly a match made in Heaven! A year later the woman called and asked if I would do Wesley's funeral, come to find out she had taken out a large insurance policy, and her son shot Wesley in self-defense!

When I arrived at the woman's house she told me that her son had an argument with Wesley in the upstairs bedroom and Wesley fired a shotgun at him and then came down the stairs after him and the boy unloaded a 9mm into him as you could still see the bullet holes in the wall, although there was no evidence of a shotgun blast, and a large bloodstain on the carpet where Wesley died, his last words, "I love you!" I ended up doing two funerals, one in the viewing room for his wife and one for his family who knew she had him killed! What a sad end to a life without God!

"But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built his house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently, and immediately it fell. And the ruin of that house was great." Luke 6:49

LOVE

"Do I have any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? "says the Lord God,"and not that he should turn from his ways and live?" Ezekiel 18:23

Most of my invitations to preach have been funerals, "Let the dead bury the dead, right?" Although I have done many, three stand out: Sammy, Wesley and Whistle. Sammy was an old Lake Worth hoodlum that I knew from elementary school and later in life picked him up when he got out of prison for murder.

I tried to minister to him about the same time the young couple were at the mission, even taking the three of them to a Milt Green seminar in Dallas where they ended up leaving and walked back! Sammy had a good heart but couldn't turn away from his life of crime and ended up getting shot trying to collect on a drug deal. I did his funeral and told the truth about his life and after the service his cousin thanked me for telling it like it was, as with most preachers they sugarcoat a persons life!

Laid out in his casket with his shirt unbuttoned down to his navel he looked like Elvis and in the audience there were three women I knew who mocked me as I preached. The burial was more like a Three Stooges movie where his buddies, who never were pall bearers, one with a cast on his arm couldn't figure how to carry his casket!

"For I have no pleasure in the death of one who dies, "says the Lord God, "therefore turn and live!" Ezekiel 18:32

LOVE

"But if you love those who love you; what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. Luke 6:32

Within these devotions on love it is my expressed intention for you to learn from my mistakes and not lose heart when trying to love the unlovely. I would say that the first ten years of my attempt at ministry was a disaster with a few Trophy's of Grace mixed in to encourage me.

Before my attempt at street, and residential ministry, the hardest to be involved in, I saw many healed and delivered through the pure power of God! The first two ladies were afflicted with a crippling ecological disease with one of them living in her yard that God touched and healed them! Then one day I got a call from a young lady who lost her baby to a miscarriage and wanted me to do the funeral, I think, my first.

I don't remember the details but the infant was wrapped and in a shoe-box so I prayed and tried to comfort the young lady in her grief. A few days later her parents called me and said that their daughter was in the hospital with acute kidney disease and on life support and would I come and pray for her. When I got there the girl was lifeless, clinically dead and the color of her skin was bright yellow. I prayed and then went into the family room where the doctor was telling her parents that there was no hope.

The Lord spoke to me and said to go back and pray again and so I did and left the hospital only to get a call several days later that the girl was healed and discharged from the hospital! Praise God!

"And these signs will follow those who believe; in My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick and they will recover." Mark 16:17,18

LOVE

"Give to everyone who asks of you. And from him who takes away your goods do not ask them back." Luke 6:30

With the bus family gone and in the books I began to teach a Bible study in an apartment complex and met a young couple who were ex-heroin addicts. I wont use their names so they don't sue me as they don't speak to me anymore after helping them for thirty five years!

Still having the property with the home and warehouse I started a little street mission and put the young couple I met over it, a bad mistake to say the least, but I was still being taught by the Holy Spirit. Every time I came in to teach or just visit everyone looked as if they were scared to death of me. Come to find out the young man told the people in the mission that we were a Satanic cult and that I sacrificed chickens outback! Help me Jesus!

At least I was learning some valuable life-lessons for ministry and how to give to people without becoming their parents. He and his wife were a different story, way too long to tell after helping them all those years only for him to cut me off for telling him he had an anger problem in which his last words to me was, "You bastard!" Anyway the Holy Spirit was teaching me the difference between agape love and human compassion that saved me much heartache and led me to walk in God's love and not my own!

"But love your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil." Luke 6:35

LOVE

"Now by chance a certain priest came down that road. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. "Likewise a Levite, when he arrived at the place, came and looked, and passed by on the other side." Luke 10:31,32

I used to show great disdain for these men of God that passed by someone in need until I experienced it for myself and know why they kept going! Because it is a major undertaking to try and help someone in need! It literally cost me everything I owned in the past forty years of helping folks! Not to mention the times I was humiliated, talked about, slandered and threatened by lawsuits by the very people I was helping.

The previous story of the family I took out of the woods that were living in a bus should have been enough trouble for one man for a lifetime, but nooooo, not me because I am a glutton for punishment! This whole thing was a Holy Ghost setup to train, equip and sharpen my spiritual discernment. The very next day after we moved the bus family in I was going up to the warehouse to see what had come in to begin to give out to others in need. The mother followed me and said, "What did we get today?" That hit me wrong because I was paying for the warehouse, the rental truck, not to mention my time and so I told her I was going to give out to other families in need and she said, "That's our story!"

Jesus! Are you kidding me, "Your story?" First lesson in the ministry to the poor about to hit me right between the eyes and the pocketbook! To make a long story short, the family would never go to church with me because they were going to the flea market to sell the stuff we gave them to buy beer, they accused me of stealing clothes from them that I paid to have laundered in which some of the filthy things covered in human waste disintegrated! They brought me before my home church and threatened to sue them if they didn't give them $2000.00, and a car given to the ministry! So, we did and sent them on their way and the church told me to quit trying to help folks!

Well, a sane person might have quit, but not me, because I still had this burning desire to help people in need, but God was not through with my on the job training, the next lesson would be about one of the believer's greatest enemies, "Human Compassion!"

"So which of these three do you thinks was a neighbor to him who fell among thieves?" And He said, "He who showed mercy on him." Then Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise." Luke 10:36,37

LOVE

"But a certain Samaritan as he journeyed, came where he was and when he saw him, he had compassion. "So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him." Luke 10:33,34

Sitting in church one Sunday, bored to death and tired of just listening to a lifeless sermon, the Holy Spirit led me out and down by a river where I found a family living in a bus. Although I had been taking men to a Motel 6 to cast the demons out of them, I had never taken on such a challenging undertaking, an entire family who had nothing!

This was my first experience loving my neighbor and I purposed to do everything I could to help them out of a bad situation. I had a friend who had some property and a house where I put the family and I had the local newspaper do a story on them so that people would donate items to the cause. The response was overwhelming as I had to rent a truck to pick up the items and used a warehouse on the property to store the goods.

The night we moved the family in they had a house full of food and furniture and their kids had new school clothes and shoes, so I had a reporter with me to record them moving in when the mother said their daughter had a high fever, so I laid my hands on her and rebuked the fever and immediately it left. It was a wonderful sight to behold!

"On the next day, when he departed, he took out two dinarii, gave them to the innkeeper and said to him, "Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you." Luke 10:35

LOVE

And behold, a certain lawyer (expert in the law of God) stood up and tested Jesus saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" He said to him, "What is written in the law?" What is your reading of it?" So he answered and said, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, with all your mind and your neighbor as yourself." Luke 10:25-27

Within these devotions on love, I will attempt to share what God did in my life and how He changed my heart to not only love Him but my neighbor as myself! From the time He sent an angel to test me I had many chances to love the unlovely by laying down my life to give them a chance to live and to also love others!

From the day I was saved my heart wasn't perfected in love and it took years of trial and error and the leading of the Holy Spirit to train and equip me to love as God loves, not that I have attained it yet! But nonetheless, I will try and convey my journey of loving my neighbor as myself.

The above-mentioned scripture is what first opened the eyes of my spiritual understanding of God's will for His body. This is what I began to teach when God had to send an angel for some on the job training for me to learn and experience the love of God. I was about to learn who my neighbor really was!

But the lawyer, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" Luke 10:29

LOVE

"A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jerico, and fell among thieves who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead." Luke 10:30

Newly saved and on fire for God I wanted to be a big-name preacher leading millions to Jesus and one Sunday after church at my pastor's home he had invited several well known evangelists including James Robison to come and fellowship and so I went expecting great things!

On my arrival I met a man from Mobile, Alabama sent on a mission to minister to the poor and come to find out his sole ministry was me! He immediately said lets go I want to show you something and reluctantly I said OK, not wanting to leave the meeting. He took me to the south-side of Ft. Worth and showed me people living in cardboard boxes, something I had no idea was happening in my home town!

This was the beginning of a new adventure and ministry for me as this man laid down his life for more than a year, training and equipping me for my life's work! As the scripture states, many have fallen among thieves, being stripped and robbed because that is what the devil does, he robs, kills and destroys from everyone he can!

Blessed is he who considers the poor; the Lord will deliver him in time of trouble. The Lord will preserve him and keep him alive. And he will be blessed on the earth. Psalm 41:1,2

LOVE

Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. I Corinthians 14:1

Agape love is defined as brotherly love, affection, good will and benevolence of which we are to pursue, but most run after the gifts of the Spirit and ignore Christ's command to love our neighbors!

I have seen so much spiritual pride in those who pursue the gifts rather than the Giver of those gifts, speaking in tongues, prophesying and dancing in the Spirit are all legitimate gifts of the Holy Spirit, but when exercised without love they sound like a three year old beating on a cymbal!

When one is born again he receives God's love, but that gift must be fertilized, pruned, hoed and watered in order for one to be able to love as God loves! We are God's garden, planted by the river of life and we bear fruit for all the world to see, the divine nature and character of the Most High!

Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. I Corinthians 13:1

LOVE

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. I John 4:7,8

True agape love leads us to sacrifice our time, our money and our heart to those who are in need. Not just words or emotion, agape love goes much deeper, reaching into the very depths of our soul!

Thirty five years ago after teaching a Bible study on loving God and our neighbor, as I was driving home to a farm we had opened for ministry I pulled down to a stop sign and there was a man lying in the weeds, dirty and sunburned and looked as though he had been in the streets a long time. Immediately I turned on to the highway trying to ignore the man when the Holy Spirit spoke to me saying, "What were you just teaching?" Convicted, I went back around and picked him up!

It was about a 45 minute trip to the farm and I questioned the man about why he was in the streets, at the same time thinking about what I needed to do to help him. When I purposed in my heart to do whatever it took to help this man off the streets, as we turned on to the road to the farm he said, "Let me out!" He said he was scared being out so long, so I told him to go down to a men's mission a block down the highway and said I would be right back.

I went home, grabbed an armful of clothes and went back down to the mission and asked where the big man was and they said we haven't seen anyone and then it hit me, He was an angel sent to test my heart and shortly after that visitation we began a residential ministry for women! Glory!

Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some have unwittingly entertained angels. Hebrews 13:2

HOPE

And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love. I Corinthians 13:13

To abide is to live, remain and dwell in the three foundational tenets of Christianity, faith, hope and love! Faith to believe, the confident expectation of hope and the divine characteristic of agape love!

We walk by faith and not by sight and we hope for the expectation of the fulfillment of His many promises as we love everyone as He loves us. Many claim to have great faith and hope for more power, but to love as He loves is a much greater attribute that comes at a much higher cost. For instance, giving your Son to die for many who don't want you or care about you, is the ultimate price of love!

True agape love demands the laying down of one's life for others. Giving up selfish motives and pleasures to help someone in their time of great need and endangering your life to save others are just some of the fruits of divine love!

For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died; and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again. II Corinthians 5:14,15 "One for all, and all for One!"
