THE FEAR OF THE LORD

"And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in Hell." Matthew 10:28

The Greek word for Hell in the above-mentioned scripture is Gehenna, which describes a physical location that illustrates what Hell is like! A garbage dump where at one time Israel sacrificed their children to the pagan god, Molech. An abomination to a Holy God!

Hell is a horrible place that mankind was never meant to be sent, as with trash to be thrown into a burning garbage dump teeming with worms, maggots, and carrion. The stench of dead bodies, animals, burning sewage and garbage repelled any visitors from such a vile sight! Hell is a place Jesus described as a burning trash heap whose fire is never quenched and the vile stench of rotting flesh torments those who are sent there, judged forever!

I pray that this devotional study on the Fear of God has opened your eyes and convicted your heart to fear and respect this awesome God and to obey His word and love Him with all of your heart! May God have mercy on us all!

"And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than with two hands to go to Hell, to the unquenchable fire. And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame than with two feet to be thrown into Hell. And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into Hell, 'where their worm (flesh) does not die and the fire is not quenched.' " Mark 9:43-48

THE FEAR OF THE LORD

Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity (ill will and mutual hatred) with God? Whoever wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. James 4:4

We who are born again are considered to be the very bride of Christ, the wife of God! Just as an earthly bride can commit adultery, so can the heavenly bride by loving something more than her Husband!

God is a jealous God who loves His bride with all of His heart, but when His bride commits adultery, His wrath breaks out on her just as a natural earthly man who finds his wife in bed with another! The love of the world and the things it contains chokes God's word right out of the heart of man and just as the parable states, he becomes unfruitful.

Ask Adam and Eve about the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh and the boastful pride of life and what it did to all of creation, mankind is still suffering the effects of their sin that ultimately led to the death, burial and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. Are you a friend of God or a friend of the world? Your answer has eternal consequences!

Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in Him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father but is from the world. I John 2:15,16

THE FEAR OF THE LORD

For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries. Anyone who has rejected Moses law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. Hebrews 10:26-30

What in the world? We were just told not to miss church and now if we sin willfully we bust Hell wide open! What is the writer of Hebrews talking about? First of all when we sin willfully without repentance there is no forgiveness of sin, Jesus died and shed His blood for sin that was repented of and not willfully repeated without asking for forgiveness and repentance!

Jesus is the sacrifice for sin and without His blood we could not receive forgiveness. Rejecting the law of Moses is speaking of an incident in the wilderness where one was caught picking up sticks on the Sabbath to cook with, an unpardonable sin that carried the death sentence! The problem is they were dealing with the blood of animals for their sacrifice for sin of which was not available for willful sin, but we are dealing with the blood of Jesus!

Do you see the seriousness of willfully sinning against a holy God who's wrath breaks out against it? If one could be executed for picking up sticks in the Old Testament, what in the world would happen to those today who put to shame the precious blood of Jesus?

Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace? For we know Him who said, "Vengeance is Mine, I will repay," says the Lord. And again, the Lord will judge His people." It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God! THE FEAR OF THE LORD

Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. I Corinthians 11:27

The apostle Paul, still warning of impending judgment upon those who take communion in an unworthy manner is driving the message home to the church at Corinth! This is now the third time he brings up the message of Holy Communion because they were defiling the sacrament with their unbecoming behavior.

True communion is nothing like what we do today with a cardboard-like wafer and Welch's grape juice, nor is it a pompous ceremonial event the Catholic church calls transubstantiation! Imagine the twelve disciples at the table and Jesus comes in dressed in festal robes, swinging His censer filled with incense speaking in Latin! Never happened! This was the first love feast!

Communion was a full on fellowship dinner with abundant food and wine called a love-feast in which the congregation would eat together and then break bread, celebrating the life and ministry of the Lord Jesus! The problem at Corinth was they showed up early, eating all the food and got drunk on the wine, defiling the feast!

But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord's body. For this reason, many are weak and sick among you, and many dead. I Corinthians 11:28-30

THE FEAR OF THE LORD

Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry, I speak as to wise men; judge for yourselves what I say. I Corinthians 10:14,15

We just saw in the previous devotional the consequences of idolatry where the children of Israel joined themselves to Baal and worshiped him and 24,000 were killed by the plague that broke out! In this same chapter the apostle Paul tells the Corinthian church to flee idolatry, lest they become sharers with demons!

The example Paul gives is concerning communion which means to share in what Jesus did on the cross and then he explains what it means to sacrifice to demon gods and become sharers with them! Can a Christian have a demon? The late Derek Prince said, "A Christian can have anything he wants!" In other words, God's wrath is carried out by demons and when we sin willfully as in the worship of false gods we open ourselves up to demonic possession!

My father used to say, "Possession is 9/10ths of the law!" Meaning that what you possess is yours! We should fear this awesome God who avenges sin and uses His instruments of indignation (demons) upon those who rebel against Him! Ref: Possession: II Timothy 2:24-26

The things the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons and not to God. and I do not want you to have fellowship (sharing, communion) with demons. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the Lord's table, and the table of demons. I Corinthians 10:20,21

THE FEAR OF THE LORD

Now, these things became our examples, to the intent that we should not lust after evil things as they also lusted. I Corinthians 10:6

Some today think because Jesus died for our sins that God has somehow changed, but He is the same God who's wrath still breaks out on sin and rebellion! The blood that Jesus shed satisfied the wrath of God on the believer, not the unbeliever!

The above-referenced scripture is an example for us today in the New Testament that we should not crave evil things. The children of Israel joined up with the women of Moab and began to commit harlotry with them and were invited to sacrifice to their gods, so Israel was joined to Baal and the anger of the Lord was aroused against them and a plague broke out, killing 24,000 people!

We as believers ought to take this example to heart before we consider that God's wrath could even break out upon us who commit willful sin! It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God!

Now all these things happened to them as examples and they were written for our admonition, (instruction) upon whom the ends of the ages have come. I Corinthians 10:11

THE FEAR OF THE LORD

For the wrath of God is revealed from Heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness. Romans 1:18

We are living in a society that has normalized perversion of all kinds, homosexuality has been injected into every facet of the media, making any and all types of gross immorality acceptable! Our children have been subjected to sex education in the schools taught by Drag Queens, their parents choosing their gender for them and gay marriage has become the norm!

Does God not see, is He not concerned anymore, has He accepted all of this perverse behavior? A resounding, no! Whether we choose to believe it or not, His wrath is being poured out on this country even now! We have allowed the premeditated slaughter of His precious unborn children, over fifty million in this country alone, their little organs being sold for profit by a demonic horde of cold hearted devils.

How can we escape the sentence of Hell? When the preachers got greedy and stopped preaching against sin fifty years ago a perverse anti-Christ spirit arose and slithered out of the proverbial closet, promoting a demonic agenda of filth and perversion that has spread across the entire world, which eventually will usher in the appearance of the Anti-Christ! Deep darkness is beginning to blanket the world covering the eyes of millions, making them believe a lie! May God have mercy!

And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting: Being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness, envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness, whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful: who, knowing, the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them. THE FEAR OF THE LORD

But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession. And he kept back part of the proceeds, his wife also being aware of it, and brought a certain part and laid it at the apostle's feet. But Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself?" Acts 5:1-3

Ananias and his wife didn't have to give all the proceeds of their sale, it was theirs to keep and to give whatever part they desired. Their sin was that they lied about what they kept, making the apostles believe they gave all!

This wasn't the church that we see today, a building full of folks, many being half-hearted and apathetic to the cause of Christ, it was a holy assembly of called out worshipers, filled with Holy Spirit power and sanctified by His grace, mercy and anointing! The very presence of God permeated the atmosphere from the outpouring of His Spirit.

Just as in ancient times when the High Priest entered the holy of hollies, if he had sin in his life he would die in the presence of the Lord! We don't know how many people die today caused by our neglect to acknowledge the Holy One's presence or how we have defiled the Holy sacraments, such as taking the Lord's supper in an unworthy manner. Ananias and his wife dropped dead because of their deceitful scheme, bringing great fear upon the rest of the assembly!

Then immediately she fell down at his feet and breathed her last. And the young men came in and found her dead , and carrying her out, buried her by her husband. So great fear came upon the whole church and upon all who heard these things. Acts 5:10,11

THE FEAR OF THE LORD

"But you denied the Holy One and the just, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, "and killed the Prince of life, whom God raised from the dead, of which we are witnesses." Acts 3:14,15

Peter had just prayed for a lame man who was healed and he took the opportunity to preach the gospel to those who gathered to see the miracle. Again, he preached the truth of God's word, convicting the people that because of their sins they killed Jesus and chose a murderer!

The world is no different today, they want to believe but they are distracted by all the commotion and media blitz that swarms them, that is until they need a miracle themselves! I've seen many miracles in my life being in ministry for 39 years, but it is different when you need one for yourself as I did eight months ago being diagnosed with bladder cancer. I hadn't been sick for 40 years and all of a sudden my life hung in the very shadow of death.

From the time I went to the ER with a liter of blood in my bladder, my kidneys totally shot with a future of dialysis, then a biopsy on my prostate and bladder exposing what the doctor said, looked like an angry beast, the grace and mercy of God was all around me. I was in the hospital nine days, then told I would lose my prostate and bladder and wear a bag, I went for a second opinion. To make a very long story short, God healed my kidneys overnight, my second opinion, a Russian doctor, scraped out the cancer which the biopsy showed the tumor went from high grade to low grade needing chemo, but upon my visit for treatment after the procedure the doctor came in and said, "I can't treat what you don't have!" I just went in for my 5-month checkup and got the report, "All clear!" Praise God!

"Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord." Acts 3:19

THE FEAR OF THE LORD

"Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ." Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Men and brethren, what shall we do?" Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let everyone of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." Acts 2:36-38

This is what is missing from modern-day preaching, the breaking of His laws and the transgressions man has committed against the Most High, brought to light bringing conviction of their sins! Peter accused the Jews of crucifying the Lord because of their unrepentant hearts and it brought them to desperation crying out, "What shall we do!"

John the baptist preached repentance and the people cried out and were saved, the young preacher, Johnathon Edwards preached the message, "Sinners in the hands of an angry God!" and the conviction of it brought about a panic among the people who grabbed hold of the supports in the building crying out for mercy thinking they were sliding into Hell!

Peter's preaching carried the anointing of the Holy Spirit who had just fallen upon the disciples and it brought about conviction of sin among all who heard and 3000 were saved that day. Today after a benign sermon of God loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life, with every head bowed and every eye closed, pray for Jesus to come into your heart and be you personal Savior, which by the way is found no where in scripture! The first words Jesus spoke when He began His ministry was, repent!

Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done among the apostles. Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need. Acts 2:43-45

THE FEAR OF THE LORD

"I am the vine, you are the branches, He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing." John 15:5

Many claim to be believers, they look good on the outside, they talk the talk, but inwardly they are spiritually dead! When you go to a funeral and see a corpse lying in the casket, usually they look pretty good after the Mortician gets through fixing them up, but they are still dead!

Cut a branch from a vine, doesn't matter: roses, tulips, grapes, they all look alive for days if they are watered, but then: they begin to dry up and slowly wither away, this is someone who does not abide in the vine! As we have seen in the parable of the sower, there are different heart conditions that determine the spiritual life of a person, either alive in Jesus or spiritually dead!

Abide means to remain or to dwell, to live in Christ in a personal relationship as with a spouse or family member. To abide is to be transformed by the blood of the Lord Jesus and supernaturally grafted into the living Vine of Christ, our Lord. Without the spiritual food provided by the Vine we would die and end up being cast into the fire!

"If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned." John 15:6

THE FEAR OF THE LORD

"When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, then the devil comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is he who received seed by the wayside." Matthew 13:19

Millions have heard God's word for eons but never being serious about what it is saying to them, the devil comes to steal it from their heart, and so they stand on the wayside of God's field and perish for lack of knowledge. When the rain and snowfall upon the ground and it is never plowed up, it begins to harden and so when one hears God's word and never obeys it, their heart becomes hard as a rock!

The parable of the sower explains the different heart conditions of man and the consequences of their actions in regards to their obedience or in most cases, disobedience to His word. The only unpardonable sin is to blaspheme the Holy Spirit, but to resist His calling you to obey is the danger of your heart being so hard that you can no longer hear His voice! Think about all the teachings, messages, sermons and devotionals you have heard over the years that brought conviction, but you ignored it and your heart became a little more hardened until there will be a time when you can no longer hear at all!

So, are you in God's field being fruitful, or are you outside on the wayside looking in? Your eternal destiny depends on your ability to hear God's voice and obey it! Jesus said that many would come to Him saying Lord, Lord, but he will say to those who refused to listen, "Depart from Me, I never knew you!" May God have mercy on us all!

"But he who received seed on the good ground is he who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and produces some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty." Matthew 13:23

THE FEAR OF THE LORD

"As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up. "That whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." John 3:14,15

The children of Israel became discouraged on their journey in the wilderness and they spoke against Moses and God, grumbling that they were brought up out of Egypt only to die in the desert!

As we have seen in previous devotionals, God doesn't take kindly to complaining, especially when it pertains to how He provides for us! So the Lord sent fiery serpents (a type of demons) among the people and they bit them and many died. This is a type and shadow of sin biting us and its wages, always death, so they cried out to Moses, a type of Jesus to remove the serpents and forgive their complaining. God told Moses to make a fiery serpent, (also a type of Jesus ) and set it on a pole and whoever is bitten when he looks at it shall live!

When we sin and transgress the commandments of God, we look to Jesus on the cross and believe in His death, burial and resurrection, appropriating the benefit of eternal life, healing and deliverance that sets us free from the law of sin and death! If the serpents of sin have bitten you, repent and ask for forgiveness and the God of all grace will wash you in the blood of His Son, Jesus Christ!

"For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved." John 3:17

THE FEAR OF THE LORD

So the people asked him, saying, "What shall we do then?" He answered and said to them, "He who has two tunics, let him give to him who has none; and he who has food, let him do likewise." Then the tax collectors also came to be baptized, and said to him, Teacher, what shall we do?" And he said to them, "Collect no more than what is appointed for you." Likewise the soldiers asked him saying, "And what shall we do?" So he said to them, "Do not intimidate anyone or accuse falsely, and be content with your wages. Luke 3:10-14

In essence, John was telling the people to repent, the door to receive the Expected One, the Lord Jesus Christ, who was about to appear on the scene at the beginning of His ministry. The multitudes were coming under conviction after hearing John's powerful messages of repentance!

Many thought that John was the Christ, being in expectation, but he set them straight by explaining the ministry of Jesus and the baptism of the Holy Spirit, yet to come when He came to be baptized by John. A new paradigm was about to begin as the Lord Jesus began His earthly ministry to plant the first New Testament church with twelve green disciples!

Jesus would begin His ministry and build a new church, no longer a place to go, but a supernatural body made up of born again Spirit filled believers. He would train, equip and send His apostles to proclaim the gospel of salvation to the lost and at the end of His earthly journey, shed His own blood to set us free from sin and eternal death!

"I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. "His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean His threshing floor, and gather the wheat into His barn; but the chaff He will burn with unquenchable fire." Luke 3:16,17

THE FEAR OF THE LORD

It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and such sexual immorality as is not even named among the Gentiles, that a man has his father's wife! I Corinthians 5:1

Immorality in the church, imagine that! Paul would be blown away by what has become the norm today in the modern day assembly of God! Gay pastors, pedophiles molesting God's children, pastors having illicit affairs, divorce, adultery and so on!

This is why the fire has gone out in our churches, we have allowed sinners to remain in the assembly of the righteous, now I know we all sin, but I am talking about willful unrepentant sin as with the boy bedding his father's wife, the kid's stepmother, I assume he was a kid, at my age almost everyone is a kid! Anyway, these things ought not to be so. When Paul found out about this immoral affair he went off on the whole crowd saying, "You are arrogant and have not mourned that he who has done this deed might be removed!"

In our mega churches and large assemblies with absolutely no accountability there is no telling what is going on, anyone can sit in church today with all kinds of sin and no one will know, creating an atmosphere of unbelief and spiritual death! When the apostle found out about this boy committing sexual immorality, he quickly rebuked the assembly and turned the lad over to the devil to destroy his flesh! When was the last time you saw that in church?

In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when you are gathered together along with my spirit, with the power of the Lord Jesus Christ, deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of his flesh, that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. Your glorying is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us. I Corinthians 5:4-7

THE FEAR OF THE LORD

And he went into all the regions around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. Luke 3:3

John the Baptist was a forerunner of the Lord Jesus Christ, but as some think because we are New Testament believers that somehow the wrath of God disappeared and the fear of the Lord is not required, we have settled for a lukewarm religion of complacency and dead ritual.

The message John was preaching would be foreign today to a religious crowd who want their ears tickled and those who were coming for John's baptism were no different, wanting another dead religious service! Repentance means to turn around and go the other way, to change your mind about your lifestyle and to forsake your sin, without which you cannot be forgiven!

When the multitudes came out to be baptized, John wanted them to feel welcomed and comfortable like we do today in our church services by saying to them, "Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?" Not exactly seeker-friendly, wanting to fill the church with big tithers, but effective in separating the wheat from the tares!

"Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance, and do not say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father, 'For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones.' "And even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore every tree which does not bear fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire." Luke 3:8,9

THE FEAR OF THE LORD

And as for this house, which is exalted, everyone who passes by it will be astonished and say, "Why has the Lord done thus to this land and this house? "Then they will answer, 'Because they forsook the Lord, God of their fathers, who brought them out of the land of Egypt, and embraced other gods, and worshiped them and served them; therefore He has brought all this calamity on them.' " II Chronicles 7:21,22

Solomon had just finished the temple of God and was dedicating it to the Lord with praise, worship and hundreds of sacrifices as it was deserving of great admiration! The glory of God had filled it and God spoke to Solomon as he prayed about the temple in which in the future it would be totally destroyed if Israel turned away from the Most High!

As we have seen in the previous devotionals I have not scratched the surface in relating the judgment of God and the fear of the Lord that comes from these events in the Old Testament. God is an awesome God who demands our total allegiance and devotion. We must remember these acts of divine judgment by a holy God are written for us as examples for our admonition upon whom the ends of the ages have come.

I didn't mention many of God's acts of judgment against rebellion and the defection of His people from His divine guidance, such as the time He destroyed the world because of man's wickedness, an extinction event when the great flood killed off the entire population of the earth, leaving Noah and His family to repopulate the world. Today however, it is taught to kids in Sunday school, more about the animals than the righteous judgment of God on a wicked and perverse people and the rainbow, a sign of a divine covenant, has become the banner of the homosexuals! May God have mercy!

"When I shut up Heaven and there is no rain, or command the locusts to devour the land, or send pestilence among My people, "if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from Heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land." THE FEAR OF THE LORD

"Thus says the Lord: 'Behold, I will raise up adversity against you from your own house; and I will take your wives before your eyes and give them to your neighbor, and he shall lie with your wives in the sight of the sun. 'For you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel, before the sun.' " II Samuel 12:11,12

Sin has it's consequences and David certainly was going to get his share of them for such a heinous crime of passion and murder! For a king to commit both adultery and murder was certain death according to the law of Moses and yet God spared his life and forgave him, although the consequences would soon follow him to the grave.

It is interesting that David's own son, Solomon said in the book of Ecclesiastes, "Because the sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil." In other words when men sin and are not immediately judged they think they have somehow escaped God's judgment, but that is simply not true! The wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Romans 1:18

Throughout the remainder of David's life he was humbled, mocked, threatened by his own son to take his throne, daughter raped, sons killed and even as he was forced to leave his kingdom, his son ravished his wives on the rooftop for all the world to see, and a man running alongside them hurled rocks and abuse toward David, but he would not stop him, believing he was deserving of the attack.

So David said to Nathan, "I have sinned against the Lord," And Nathan said to David, "The Lord also has put away your sin; you shall not die. "However, because by this deed you have given great occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme, the child also who is born to you shall surely die." II Samuel 12:13,14

THE FEAR OF THE LORD

When the wife of Uriah heard that her husband was dead, she mourned for her husband. And when her mourning was over, David sent and brought her to his house, and she became his wife and bore him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased the Lord. II Samuel 11:26,27

Guilty of adultery and murder, two transgressions that both carried a death sentence, David thought he was off the hook, believing the whole affair was neatly swept under the proverbial carpet, but God saw his sin and was greatly displeased with his behavior. There are always consequences for every evil action!

It had been a year or so since David's great sin and Bathsheba had delivered a baby boy, all was forgotten and life was good, except God had not forgotten and He sent the prophet Nathan to expose his sin to him. Nathan came to David and told him about a rich man and a poor man and said that the rich man had someone come to visit him, but instead of taking a lamb from his own flock to feed the visitor he took the poor man's only ewe lamb, raised as a pet and served it to his guest.

David's anger was greatly aroused against the man and he said to Nathan, "As the Lord lives, the man who has done this shall surely die!" Then Nathan said to David, "You are the man!" David was exposed, his conscience pierced with the words of the prophet and then God spoke, further bringing him to his knees in repentance!

Why have you despised the commandment of the Lord, to do evil in His sight? You have killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword; you have taken his wife to be your wife, and have killed him with the sword of the people of Ammon. 'Now therefore, the sword shall never depart from your house, because you have despised Me, and taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.' II Samuel 12:9,10

The Fear of the Lord Part X

Then it happened one evening that David arose from his bed and walked on the roof of the king's house. And from the roof he saw a woman bathing and the woman was beautiful to behold. II Samuel 11:2

King David, a man after God's own heart, sweet psalmist of Israel and mighty warrior was about to make a grave mistake in judgment by committing adultery with a married woman. As king, David could have had any woman in Israel he wanted as long as they were single and he in fact already had several.

Many a mighty man and woman of God have made this same mistake by seeing something beautiful, but forbidden and have fallen into the deadly sin of adultery. Even the First Lady of creation fell into the devil's trap when she saw that the fruit on the tree she was commanded not to eat was good! All of mankind has suffered from that sin! David threw all caution to the wind and took the beautiful Bathsheba into his bed and later she sent word back to him that she was pregnant.

A one night fling instantly turned into a deadly trap for David as he was about to find out that Bathsheba was married to one of his faithful warriors, Uriah the Hittite. To hide his guilt, David called for Uriah to be brought back from the battlefield and he would simply send him home to enjoy his lovely wife and "Bam!" problem solved, or so he thought! David didn't know that Uriah was a loyal and faithful warrior, even though he was a Gentile and would not go home to his wife and betray his fellow warriors fighting and dying on the battlefield. It seems one lie always leads to another as David conceives a diabolical plan to murder Uriah, and so the drama continues!

David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it by the hand of Uriah. And he wrote in the letter, saying, "Set Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retreat from him, that he may be struck down and die." II Samuel 11:14,15

THE FEAR OF THE LORD

Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed than the fat of rams. I Samuel 15:22

The prophet Samuel anointed Saul King of Israel and delivered the command of the Lord to destroy His enemies, the Amalekites. His words were simple and to the point: Utterly destroy all they have, do not spare them, kill both men and women, infant and nursing child, ox, sheep and donkey! This relates to us to destroy that which has held us in bondage, strongholds of lust, pride, greed, unforgiveness, etc. so that we can be totally free from sin.

Saul, like most was leaning on his own understanding of God's command and did it his way. He took Agag, king of the Amalekites captive, kept the best of the spoils and totally disobeyed God's command to wipe out everything! The prophet Samuel showed up and rebuked him for not carrying out God's orders and hacked Agag to pieces in front of him. As he was leaving Saul grabbed his robe and tore it and Samuel turned and said, "The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today, and has given it to a neighbor of yours, who is better than you."

Saul was totally rejected, his kingdom torn from him and given to David, the Holy Spirit was also taken and an evil spirit (demon) from God was given to him. This is the result of rebellion that leads to witchcraft and as it turned out for Saul, who turned to a witch to hear from God before his last battle in which he and his sons were killed! The wages of sin is always death!

"For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, He also has rejected you from being king." I Samuel 15:23

THE FEAR OF THE LORD

Then Elkanah went to his house at Ramah. But the child ministered to the Lord before Eli the priest. Now the sons of Eli were corrupt; (literally, sons of the devil) they did not know the Lord. I Samuel 2:11,12

Samuel's mother, Hannah was barren but God blessed her and she conceived and lent her son, Samuel to the Lord to become a prophet of God! The priesthood was corrupt, Eli the priest was a fat, lazy man who would not keep his sons in line who were bedding the temple prostitutes and stealing the offerings given to God!

God blessed Samuel who would become a powerful prophet of God, but the outcome of the house of Eli would be devastating, ending in death and the theft of the Ark of God! Eli's two sons were killed in one day, God cursed the house of Eli, and when Eli heard that the ark was stolen by the Philistines he fell off of his seat backwards and broke his neck. His daughter in law delivered his grandson and died before naming him Ichabod, saying, "The glory (presence of God) has departed Israel."

As you can see, God's house is to be holy and its priesthood above reproach, then and now in the New Testament where we are not dealing with the blood of bulls and goats, but with the precious blood of Jesus and so we ought to fear God and minister in the power and presence of His Holy Spirit.

"For I have told Eli that I will judge his house forever for the iniquity which he knows, because his sons made themselves vile and he did not restrain them. "And therefore I have sworn to the house of Eli that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be atoned for by sacrifice or offering forever," I Samuel 3:13,14

The Fear of the Lord Part VII

On the next day, all the congregation of the children of Israel complained against Moses and Aaron, saying, "You have killed the people of the Lord." Numbers 17:41

Imagine, you just saw three of God's leaders who rebelled against Moses go alive into Hell before the entire congregation, along with their families and 250 men of renown turned into french fries by the fire from Heaven and still you complain? If that won't raise your fear of God level, I don't know what will!

Moses couldn't believe it either, then God said, "Get away from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment!" Moses then told Aaron to take his censer and put fire in it (a type of intercession) and take it quickly to the congregation and make atonement, for wrath has gone out from the Lord! The plague has begun.

Keep in mind, the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience as it states in Romans and the people's disobedience was complaining! Have you ever complained against the Lord? You might want to think twice next time you feel like you can do a better job of running your life than He can!

And Aaron stood between the dead and the living; so the plague was stopped. Now those who died in the plague were fourteen thousand, seven hundred, besides those who died in the Korah incident. Numbers 16:48,49

The Fear of the Lord VI

Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, with Dathan and Abiram the sons of Eliab, and On the son Peleth, sons of Reuben, took men; and they rose up before Moses with some of the children of Israel, two hundred and fifty leaders of the congregation, men of renown. Numbers 16:1,2

Happens all the time, someone's not happy with leadership and rebels against their authority and that is why we have thousands of denominations, sects and even cults, because of rebellion! Rebellion is the sin of witchcraft, obtaining something by means other than God, and it carries a death sentence!

Remember, Moses is a type of Jesus, God's authority on the earth and these leaders dared to question the leadership of Moses and Aaron which was a bad idea and led to their demise. The wrath of God always comes against the disobedient, either instantly, in this case or in the near future, but it always comes. Moses challenged them all to appear before him and God said He was ready to consume the entire congregation and would have if Moses had not fallen on his face crying out for mercy!

After Moses rebuked them and warned the congregation to separate themselves from Korah, Dathan and Abiram the ground opened up and all of them, their families and possessions went down alive into Hell! Then fire fell from the Lord and consumed the 250 leaders of God's people!

Yet the house of Israel rebelled against Me in the wilderness; they did not walk in My statutes; they despised My judgments, which if a man does, he shall live by them; and they greatly defiled My Sabbaths. Then I said I would pour out My fury on them in the wilderness, to consume them. Ezekiel 19:13

The Fear of the Lord V

Moreover, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware that all our fathers were under the cloud, all passed through the sea, all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, and all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ. But with most of them, God was not pleased, for their bodies were scattered in the wilderness. I Corinthians 10:1-5

The apostle Paul is warning the church at Corinth that what happened to Israel because of their disobedience in the wilderness was an example for us in the New Testament that we should not lust after evil things.

Israel was involved in idolatry, gross immorality and turned away from the Most High and twenty-three thousand were killed in one day! They also tested God and were destroyed by serpents (a type of demons) and they complained and were destroyed by the destroyer. Many today think that God has somehow changed and doesn't see our sin because Jesus died for us, but when a believer commits willful sin he is trampling upon the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ and has insulted the Holy Spirit!

The Old Testament is a type and shadow of things to come, for us who are of the New Covenant, a better covenant indeed, but it has much more serious consequences for those who don't obey but continue in sin! Remember the beginning of wisdom is the fear of the Lord!

Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, (instruction) upon whom the ends of the ages have come. I Corinthians 10:11

The Fear of the Lord Part IV

And the Angel of the Lord appeared to Moses in a flame of fire from the midst of a bush. So he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, but the bush was not consumed. Exodus 3:2

Moses was drawn from the waters of the Nile by Pharaoh's daughter and she took him and raised him as her own while all the other new born boys were killed, except those spared by the midwives who feared God! Moses grew up in wealth and privilege until he killed an Egyptian and fled into the desert.

God was raising up a deliverer for His people Israel who had been in bondage to the Egyptians and made Moses a shepherd to train and equip him to lead them out of slavery, a type and shadow of the Lord Jesus Christ. Being humbled as a lowly shepherd built character in Moses to become one of the greatest leaders of all time.

One day Moses was drawn to Horeb, the mountain of God where he saw a bush burning but not consumed. From within the bush God called Moses into His service to set His people free from the bondage of slavery, but warned him to remove his sandals because he was on holy ground! Jesus was also called by God to set us free from the bondage of sin and then He led Him into the desert!

And the Lord said: "I have surely seen the oppression of My people who are in Egypt, and I have heard their cry because of their taskmasters, for I know their sorrows." Exodus 3:7

The Fear of the Lord Part III

And the Lord said, "Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grave, "I will go down now and see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry against it that has come to Me; and if not, I will know." Genesis 18:20,21

The outcry of sin reached the ears of the Most High from the blood of the innocent and the perversion of the ungodly inhabitants who even tried to rape the angels sent to destroy them! Imagine the outcry today from 65 million innocent unborn children murdered by their own mothers!

America has become a modern-day Sodom and Gomorrah, a cesspool of filth, perversion of every kind and a people who have lost their fear of God! Pornography, prostitution, drug and alcohol addiction and homosexuality abound! Anything that used to be ab-normal is now normal with transgenders and drag queens preying on our children and the LGBT-Q-P agenda promoting gay marriage and promiscuity of all kinds!

How can America escape the judgment of a holy God who has been deeply offended by our perverse behavior? When the angels reached Lot's house the men of the city surrounded it wanting to have sex with them and even after they were struck blind, it didn't stop them. It reminds me of the gay-pride parades with hundreds of perverts flaunting their homosexuality before the world with absolutely no fear of God!

"Look, this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom: She and her daughter had pride, (gay pride) fullness of food (wealth) and abundance of idleness; and neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy." (the unborn) Ezekiel 16:49

The Fear of the Lord Part II

Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that the intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. Genesis 6:5

God created Adam and Eve to be His earthly family, to be fruitful and multiply and fill the world with their offspring, but from the time of their sin against Him up until the time he destroyed the world, mankind was separated from their heavenly Father. Sin had entered God's creation, defiling it and hardening the hearts of all mankind!

God was sorry He made man and decided to destroy all of mankind and every living thing on the planet because of their wickedness. In order to preserve a people for Himself He chose Noah and His family to ride out the storm of His wrath and re-populate the world in an ark which was a type and shadow of Jesus, in other words to be in Christ is to be safe from God's wrath!

As Noah obeyed God and built the ark he preached to the people that judgment was coming, the end of all things, just as it is today. But they didn't listen and mocked the crazy old man building a boat in the desert. Imagine their faces as the door of their salvation closed and it began to rain and then all hell broke loose and the world was destroyed with a flood of God's righteous judgment!

"For as the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, "and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be." Matthew 24:38,39

The Fear of the Lord Part I

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; a good understanding have all those who do His commandments, His praise endures forever. Psalm 111:10

We as the body of Christ have drifted away from fearing God in this liberal age, forgetting we serve a great and awesome God who created the universe! As the scripture states, fearing God is the beginning of wisdom, but because of our lack of reverence we have become ignorant!

Most of New Testament Christianity thinks that because Jesus died to satisfy the wrath of God that He also somehow changed God's image, becoming more of a Santa Claus type character who doles out blessings to everyone, while not noticing their behavior. Don't be fooled by the notion that God has changed, He is the same God who hates sin and created Hell for the devil and his angels and anyone who has rejected His Son Jesus!

God is an awesome God who reigns supreme over the entire universe and He should receive glory and honor as our Supreme authority, Father and Lord who created us in His image! I pray as you read these devotionals that your fear and reverence for Him will increase and that you will restore that which you have drifted away from.

Jesus said, "In this manner, therefore pray: Our Father in Heaven, hallowed be Your name." Matthew 6:9
