By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, of whom it was said, "In Isaac your seed shall be called," concluding that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead, from which he also received him in a figurative sense. Hebrews 11:17-19
Abraham received a word from God that he would be a father of many nations and so it was reckoned to him as righteousness. Now after the son is born, God is asking him to sacrifice him on the altar, talk about a test of faith, here he has the promised son and God wants to kill him!
Throughout your journey your faith will be tested many times just as it was for Abraham. Look at all he went through just to obtain the promise of a son and then to think about having to give him up as a sacrifice to God. The main point is to always know that God has a plan and that His plan is always the right way to go. Abraham obeyed God and took the boy up to the place of sacrifice and built an altar and as he was about to bring the knife down to kill the lad, God spoke!
Abraham knew that even if he killed his son that God could raise him up again because he was the son God promised. As Abraham looked up there was a ram caught in a thicket provided by God for a sacrifice and he and the boy were able to worship God together.
"By Myself I have sworn, says the Lord, because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son-blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies."
