"Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. "But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen the good part, which will not be taken away from her."Luke 10:38-42
Jesus entered the home of a woman named Martha and she had a sister named Mary who sat at His feet and heard His word. Martha and Mary represent two types of people, those who sit at the feet of Jesus and those who are distracted by other things.
For over thirty years I have observed many who say they are believers but they don't spend time in the Word or prayer and are always distracted by the things of the world. Our relationship with Jesus is the most important thing we have to nurture and maintain throughout our lives. To know Him is supreme and like treasure in Heaven it will not be taken away from us. There are multitudes of things that we do that are of no earthly or heavenly value. Think about where you spend your time and on what and evaluate what is most important in your life, Jesus or the things of the world?
"Now he who received seed among thorns is he who hears the word, and the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful.." Matthew 13:22
It's true, the world has a lot to care about with its politics and war, disasters and recessions, it is like riding a roller coaster of worry and fear, all the more important to sit at the feet of Jesus who told us not to fear or worry. That is what Martha was doing, busy about things that seemed necessary to her but not nearly as important as hearing the word of the Lord! Mary on the other hand according to Jesus chose the good part which was storing up for her treasure in Heaven.
So, where's your treasure, whats valuable to you, a secure relationship with the King of all kings or a pile of rusty treasure on earth, subject to be stolen or lost? Millions have worked and struggled for the security of the world all of their lives only to die spiritually bankrupt, never storing up any of the true treasure reserved for those who sat at the feet of Jesus!
"But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you." Matthew 6:33
