"Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: "and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock." Matthew 7:24,25
Recently here in Texas a house built on a cliff overlooking a lake began to fall into the water because it was built on a fault line and the foundation seemed to be sitting on sandstone and not solid rock. The story hit the national news and the house had to be burned in order to demolish it and a couple's $800,000.00 dream home went up in smoke. The people who owned the home had only lived in it for a few short months before they spotted cracks in their foundation and quickly moved out.
I believe God is speaking loud and clear to the world about what we have built our houses on and I am not speaking of physical homes, I am speaking of eternal dwellings. In the last couple of years the news has been filled with horrific stories of floods, mudslides, hurricanes, sinkholes, earthquakes and wildfires, all washing away the earth beneath what people thought was a solid foundation. I have never seen so much devastation in my life as has happened around the world in regards to the foundations men have built on. Many times God speaks through natural disasters and catastrophic events because He has our full attention!
What did Jesus mean when He said that a wise man builds his house on solid rock? The rock He is speaking of is our relationship with Him and what we have put our trust in, in regards to our spiritual life. When the storms of life come where do you run, to the world or to Jesus, whether sickness or financial problems, family relationships or whatever, what is your foundation resting on? You can plainly see what the world does when it experiences catastrophic events, they immediately run to the insurance companies and FEMA for assistance and what is really puzzling is the fact that they normally rebuild on the very site that was washed away, not remembering what they had just experienced because their house was built on sand, and not solid rock!
"But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: "and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall." Matthew 7:26,27
BUILDING A SOLID FOUNDATION
"Jesus asked His disciples, saying, "Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?" So they said, "Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets." He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" Matthew 16:13-15
The disciples had been walking with Jesus now for some time, experiencing signs, wonders and miracles of all kinds and yet they couldn't answer Him when He asked them who men thought He was. Peter on the other hand answered Him and said, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Jesus told him that flesh and blood did not reveal that to him, but His heavenly Father gave him a revelation of who He was. Jesus then told them that on this rock He would build His church and the gates of Hell would not prevail against it.
The rock that Jesus was speaking of was not Peter because his name means little pebble, He was speaking of a supernatural revelation of knowing Him and building a relationship with Him in order to build an eternal dwelling place. Nearly everyone on the planet knows who Jesus is, but very few actually know Him intimately in a personal relationship. We know lots of people around the world by recognizing them but we don't know them personally and that is what Jesus was trying to tell His disciples. Building your house on the rock is building a solid foundational relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ!
The question remains, how do we build a relationship with someone we can't see, someone who doesn't normally speak in an audible voice? The answer is, to spend time seeking Him in His word and through prayer and at the same time by submitting yourself under His divine control to lead and guide you through the storms of life. Relationships take time and much effort in order to have something solid to hold on to and put all of your trust in and knowing Jesus is no different, it will literally take all of your life, but the rewards of knowing Him will render an eternal treasure and ultimately a supernatural house built on the Rock of Christ!
That I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death. Philippians 3:10
DOES HE KNOW YOU?
"Not everyone who says to Me 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of Heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in Heaven." "Many will say to Me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?' Matthew 7:21,22
For years I directed residential facilities for men and women with addictions and life controlling issues of all kinds. Many would be set free immediately from whatever bondage they were in and then they spent a year in the program being discipled, rooted and hopefully grounded in the Word of God. What was amazing to me was their ability to mimic those who truly got saved by speaking Christianese, praise God, hallelujah, glory, etc. Like Chameleons they changed from drug addicted prostitutes into clean upstanding church folks overnight, true, many were drastically transformed by the power of God but many others only pretended to be born again.
That is what Jesus is saying in the above mentioned scripture, that not everyone who says Lord, Lord will enter His kingdom, and even though they performed signs and wonders, cast out demons or prophesied, they did not have a relationship with Him! So it is today: multitudes performing all kinds of signs, preaching, teaching, laying hands on the sick and looking like followers of Christ but like the disciples who left Jesus, they really didn't have a true intimate relationship with the Lord, but like Judas they could perform miracles in His name by a temporary power of attorney.
How sad it will be on that fateful day of judgment when those who thought they knew Him will hear those fearful words: I never knew you! Multitudes who simply went to church and acted out their so-called conversion, but never truly met the Lord or took the time to get to know Him will perish in an eternal flame of His judgment away from His presence forever! Like the tares and the wheat, the tares will become evident for all to see, and the wheat, the true believers and followers of Christ will be gathered into the kingdom of Heaven in the presence of Him who died for them and shed His blood so that they could inherit eternal life.
"And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!' " Matthew 7:23
